Overseas experience boosts employability
Robert Plascencia, a junior studying Electrical and Computer Engineering and minoring in Business and Entrepreneurship, recently fulfilled his high school dream of traveling the world. In order to gain cross-cultural experience, and heighten his German language skills, Plascencia studied abroad in Berlin, Germany through AHA at the Freie Universität Berlin during Summer 2013. A vision for energy efficiency
When Sam Walker wanted to build a solar trailer for his senior design project, his professors balked. Most projects were either industry sponsored or based on faculty research, not on the design whims of a student.
But Walker stuck with his vision to build a mobile station that could supply power using solar energy — and luckily so. After writing a formal proposal and raising thousands of dollars, his professors agreed to let him design, build, and present the trailer at the annual Engineering Expo. Continue reading
A community of makers
Are you a self-proclaimed tinkerer? A maker? A rabid supporter of DIY culture? If so, consider attending a free public lecture called “A Community of Makers” on Monday, April 21 at 5 p.m at LaSells Stewart Center.
Sponsored by the colleges of Engineering and Liberal Arts, OSU Libraries, Austin Entrepreneurship Program, and Create@OregonState, the lecture will feature a talk by Travis Good, MAKE magazine contributing editor, OSU alum, and maker movement champion. He will answer the question “What’s the big deal about ‘making’?” He’ll share how making is transforming the landscape of education, supporting STEM / STEAM initiatives, and motivating people to engage in learning-by doing. He’ll also explain why making represents an opportunity for you.
Stick around for a hands-on micro maker faire beginning at 6 p.m. to see the innovative, playful, and engaging ways some of our local makers are already creating.

Senior spotlight: Karryn Johnsohn
Karryn Johnsohn, a senior in civil engineering at Oregon State University, has had a passion for teaching since she was eight years old, when she taught her younger brother how to multiply numbers before he had even learned how to add or subtract. But it was her love for bridges that led her to Oregon State to pursue a bachelor’s and master’s in civil engineering. Now, preparing for graduate school, she shares some of her own inspirations and future goals. Continue reading
