Recent Project Leads
Caitlen Monnone (Environmental Science): Caitlen acted as an independent project lead for the Marine Team based: “El Nino Impacts on Rockfish Reproduction”.
Caitlen spent a summer at the coast in 2015, taking classes in field sampling and oceanography at Hatfield Marine Science Center. As a project leader, she organized and managed volunteers for weekly sampling of rockfish otoliths, muscle, and gonads in collaboration with local charter fishing vessels. This challenging effort has trained dozens of students in dissection methods and resulted in over 800 individual samples over two years!

Melinda Myers (Integrative Biology): Melinda spearheaded improvements to the Marine Team website and social media presence.
In 2015, Melinda joined the Marine Team Seminar as an informal contributor to this lunchtime discussion group. By 2016, she manned the Marine Team booth at Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Marine Sciences Day event, helping to build excitement and awareness for the group. She took the reins on the website revamp this summer, creating content and assisting with design. She actively participated in ongoing research projects as the Current Marine Team student liaison.

Ashley Yarbrough (Fisheries and Wildlife): Ashley collaborated with NOAA researchers to improve Octopus population models.
Ashley Yarbrough came to Oregon from Chicago to get a marine focused experience. She started in the Marine Team Seminar and got involved by volunteering with rockfish sampling and the dynamic revetment monitoring trips. While spending both the summer and fall in residence at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, Ashley lead the octopus aging project, using beaks and stylets to age North Pacific Giant Octopus samples collected during NOAA surveys. Her works aimed to improve management of this data poor species.

Matt Damiano:
Matt regularly attended the Marine Team Seminar and assisted with various projects over years of involvement with the Marine Team. Matt went on to get his Masters at the University of Maryland at Chesapeake Biological Lab and got a job working as a biologist at Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission.

Amber Eaton:
Amber Eaton volunteered on the El Nino Impacts on Rockfish Reproduction Project in 2015 and led the sampling events on the southern Oregon coast. She worked as a summer intern with the ODFW near Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Eric Post:
Eric completed an independent research study on ichthyoplankton from the Cayman Islands. He diligently identified thousands of individual fish specimen collected over three years of sampling. Eric is now employed at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, in St. Petersburg, FL.

Katie Zibble:
Katie helped through the years of Dynamic Revetment Monitoring. Her hard work helped complete the project and earned her a position with ODFW. She has worked for the Hatfield Marine Science Center and is now the program coordinator for OMSI’s Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray.
