Dear Forestry students,

As Spring term draws to a close, I am provided with an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the College during my tenure.  Since joining the staff and faculty in the College of Forestry in 2001, one of the most enjoyable activities I have participated in is welcoming the incoming class of students each year.  Since 2001, , amongst many other achievements, we have witnessed the growth of our eCampus student population which now includes 1/3 of our undergraduate students, we have welcomed the Cascades and La Grande campuses to the CoF family, we have introduced the Renewable Materials undergraduate major, and we have established of the professional program in Forestry.

The graduating class of 2014 holds special fondness in my heart as I am retiring at the end of this summer.  A new head advisor will be joining the College this fall.   For those of you who are returning for next year, continue to challenge yourself and embrace all of the opportunities to learn and grow that this College and University provides.

As for our graduates, congratulations on your accomplishments, strive for excellence in all that you do, and contribute to the betterment of our society and resources.

Continuing students will begin registering for Fall term classes beginning on May 18th.  If you have not yet signed up for an appointment with your advisor, check your ONID email for information signing up or stop by their office to put your name on the sign up sheet.  Don’t delay and don’t miss your appointment; you want to register for Fall term classes as soon as you are able.  Not sure when that time is?  Check your registration status in Student Online Services.

Important Dates to Remember!
Last day to withdraw from a class – 11:55 p.m., Friday, May 16
Last day to S/U a class – 5 p.m., Friday, May 16
Memorial Day holiday – Monday, May 26

The last day to drop a class for Spring term is this Friday, April 11th!

What should you know about dropping a course and what’s the difference between a drop and withdrawal?

What’s the difference between a drop and a withdrawal from a class?
Well, first of all it’s the deadline.  You may DROP a class through the second week of the term.   If you drop a class by this deadline, the class effectively disappears from your transcript as though you never registered for it and if tuition or course fees were assessed, they will be reimbursed to your student account.    You may WITHDRAWAL from a class through the seventh week of the term.  If you withdraw from a class by this deadline, you receive a “W” on your transcript.  The credits for that class are removed/subtracted from your overall total credits earned for the term and there is no effect on your GPA.  Note, these credits still count in your “attempted” credits and count towards maximum credits allowed for financial aid purposes.   So, you should consider these things if you are receiving financial aid and need to be a full time student.

Why would you choose one over the other? 
Well, perhaps you realize you are in over your head in a class (either you’re not prepared for the material or you’re taking a lot of classes this term or you’re working a lot or…) and it’s before the DROP deadline.  Well, first you should talk with your advisor to make sure dropping won’t put you behind or delay entry into another class or mess up your scholarship or financial aid eligibility or… but if you DROP the class before this Friday  your account will be credited if it changes your tuition assessment level.

If you miss the DROP deadline and find you just can’t make it through a class for any number of reasons (again you really need to speak to your advisor before you make any final decision on withdrawing from a class) you can strategically use WITHDRAWAL to maintain an acceptable GPA and plan to take the class again (or perhaps a different class that meets the requirement) when you’re more prepared or have adequate time in your schedule.  Your GPA is safe and as long as at the end of the term you successfully complete 67% of the total number of credits your originally registered for you will have met the requirement for continuing financial aid as well.

How do I DROP or WITHDRAWAL?
Both functions are available through Student Online Services.  However, before you do either, speak with your advisor to make sure you have the full story and aren’t getting yourself into a negative situation for future registration/course enrollment.

What do I do if I have a HOLD on my record?
If you have a HOLD on your record that would prevent you from DROPPING or WITHDRAWING from a course, you should visit the Registrar’s Office in the Kerr Admin Building for assistance as they  can administratively drop or withdraw you from a course(s).

Are you a senior planning to graduate this June?  Well, be sure to apply for graduation by the April 11th deadline!  If you don’t apply you can’t graduate!  And if you have not yet documented your work experience be sure to do so ASAP.  If we do not have record of your 6 months work experience your graduation will be delayed until we have the proper paperwork on file.   Please stop by the Student Services Office, Peavy 250, for the form you need.

Spring term registration has begun!  Have you met with your advisor yet?  If not, you need to do so ASAP!

Not sure when you register?  Log in to Student Online Services and click on “Register” and then “Check your registration status.”  Be sure you register at the time you are given access – you don’t want to miss out on class option by waiting too long.

If Spring is your last term and you are graduating this June you MUST apply for graduation by Friday, April 11!  You apply using Student Online Services.

If you are a Renewable Materials student:
Spring term advising for Renewable Material majors will begin February 10.  David Smith will distribute his availability to all RM majors and post a sign-up sheet outside his office (RH 236).  First year students, and those with any special questions or issues, are encouraged to sign-up for 1-hour appointments.  All other RMs should plan for 30 minutes to go over winter term progress, assemble a spring term schedule, talk about summer internship plans, and pick up registration PINs.

If you are a Natural Resources or Recreation Resource Management student or in the OLD Forest Management program:
Laurie’s Spring term 2014 advising appointments for the original Forest Management, Natural Resources, and Recreation Resource Management students will start on Monday, Feb. 10^th.     Please look for her email in your ONID accounts late-Jan/early-Feb; this will explain how to set up an appointment.  Or stop by Peavy Hall 211 early February and you’ll see advising sign-up sheets on the bulletin board outside her office.

If you are a FE, FE/CE, or Forestry student:
Sandy will start advising for Spring term next week, Jan. 21 – Jan. 24 for Pre- Forestry, Pro-Forestry, FOM, Pre and Pro FE, and Pre and Pro FE/CE students.  She will be away from the office from Feb. 19 to Mar. 17, so it is imperative to make your appointment early.   Sign-up sheets are now available, however PIN’s won’t be available for awhile.  Sandy will email the PIN’s to those students that come in for advising before they are available and they will also be available in the notes on MyDegrees.  Prior to your appointment please check your MyDegrees to verify that everything is up-to-date.

Are you looking for a permanent or summer job?  Not sure where to start?  Well, the Society of American Foresters Student Chapter Job Fair is coming up on February 4th!  The even will take place in the Richardson Hall knuckles from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  You will want to come prepared in professional clothes, a resume, and a smile!

Visit Career Services in the basement of the Kerr Admin Building to have your resume and cover letter reviewed and to get some interview practice in their mock interview sessions!

 

 

All student email accounts have been migrated to Google email.  You will need to login to http://oregonstate.edu/google to access your ONID email. You may also set up access to your  ONID email on their mobile devices using Google’s mobile apps.  You will not be  “new” email addresses as a result of this move, and you will still receive email sent to your @onid.orst.edu address. The email you send from Google Apps for OSU will use  your @onid.oregonstate.edu address.

This change gives you the benefits that Google Apps provide: a 30 GB mailbox, advanced tools and functionality, and anytime, anywhere access through Google’s mobile apps and web interface.

The OSU Computer Helpdesk will continue to support ONID email and they also support all of Google Apps for OSU. If you or the students you work with have questions, you may contact the Helpdesk at http://oregonstate.edu/is/tss/och.
