Welcome to Spring Term College of Forestry Undergrads!

Are you looking for ways to get more involved in the College of Forestry? A great place to start is at the 2015 Spring Clubs day!  This event will be held on April 15 from 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm in the Peavy Hall Courtyard.

Clubs represented will include:

• International Forestry Students Association
• Ambassadors
• Xi Sigma Pi
• American Society of Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing
• International Society of Aboriculture
• VFSA (Veteran’s Association)

By getting involved in a student club, it is not only a great resume booster, but it gives you the opportunity to make new friends, network with professionals, participate in fun activities, attend workshops and national conferences, and become more involved in the field of forestry and natural resources.

Happy finals week College of Forestry Undergrads!

The Student Services Office is beginning a new program called Student Services Everyday.  This means that you can visit the Student Services Office, located in Peavy 250, every day of the week for a new opportunity!

Monday Maps: Be the first person to guess the national/state park monument, wilderness, etc. and win a prize!

Tuesday Trivia: Be the first to answer the trivia question correctly a win a prize!

Wednesday Warmup: Each week, free coffee will be available in the SLC, Peavy 252, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

Thankful Thursday: Each term, we’ll sponsor a local charity and collect small donations each Thursday.  Give back to your community! Drop off your spare change!

Fernhopper Friday: The official publication day for the newsletter and blog!

These opportunities are not just limited to students on the Corvallis campus, E-campus students can participate in all of the days (except coffee, sorry!) and if you win, we will mail you your prize!

So, come on down to the Student Services Office every day of the week to take advantage of the resources and opportunities offered!  There’s something new happening every day in the Student Services Office, Peavy 250!

There are only 94 days until graduation.  Seniors are anxiously finishing the last of their classes in preparation for the big day.  The seniors in the College of Forestry have played a big role within the college; they are the role models and mentors for the underclassman, and are living proof that we can make it through college successfully.  Listed below, there are two awards that graduating seniors can be nominated for to reward them for all of their hard work.

The Harold Bowerman Leadership Award

This award is presented annually to a graduating senior who exemplifies outstanding leadership or service in not only the College of Forestry, but in the OSU community, or the state/nation/world as well.  Nominations for this award may be made by students, faculty, or staff members of the College of Forestry.  Self-nominations are also permitted.

To nominate a worthy senior, a complete nomination packet will include:

1. A completed nomination form, available in the Student Services Office (Peavy 250)
2. A letter of nomination from a CoF student, faculty, or staff member
3. A letter of support from a second (or more) CoF student, faculty, or staff member
4. A copy of the student’s resume

The Paul and Neva Dunn Senior Award

This award is also presented annually to an outstanding graduating senior.  This award is based on high scholastic achievement combined with potential professional ability.  Involvement in college, university, or community activities, offices held, and forestry work background proves as evidence of this professional ability.

To nominate an outstanding senior, a complete nomination packet will include:

1. A letter of nomination from a CoF student, faculty, department, or staff member
2. Two letters of recommendation from CoF faculty or staff (or a single letter co-signed by 2 or more faculty/staff)
3. A copy of the student’s resume

 

Both award nomination packets must be submitted to Kira Hughes in the Student Services Office (Peavy Hall 250) by Friday, May 8, 2015 by 5 pm.

It’s week 9 College of Forestry, and the only things standing between you and spring break are finals!  Are you ready to take the test that could potentially define your grade in the class you’ve worked so hard on the past 9 weeks?  Here are some good tips and tricks to help you study and earn the grade you want:

• Find a comfortable and quiet place to study with good lighting and little distractions (try avoiding your own bed, it is very tempting to just take a nap instead)- consider renting a study room at the Valley Library
• If you choose to study in a group, only study with others who are serious about the test
• Don’t try to do all your studying the night before the test.  Instead, space out your studying by reviewing class material several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time
• Take short breaks frequently.  Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle
• Don’t study later than the time you usually go to sleep, you may fall asleep or be tempted to fall asleep

Montana Conservation Corps is an AmeriCorps national service program that serves communities and conservation needs throughout the northern range of the Rocky Mountains.  Young adult participants enroll as AmeriCorps members who serve between 3-9 months.

Montana Conservation Corps has many field opportunities coming up in 2015.  These opportunities range from 5-9 month enrollments or summer-only opportunities.  All of these opportunities provide students with an education award and hands-on experience that will be a great addition to their resume.

There is also a special opportunity for Armed Forces Veterans and Service Members through Montana Conservation Corps called the Veterans Green Corps.  This is a field-based opportunity in which participants enroll as AmeriCorps members who dedicate a term of service to the betterment of America’s public lands.

Winter career fairs are quickly approaching!

All Majors Career Fair: February 18th, 11am-4pm

Employers including Airgas, Georgia-Pacific, Roseburg Forest Products, and the U.S. Forest Service will be in the CH2M Hill Alumni Center on February 18th from 11am-4pm to meet with prospective employees.  All majors are welcome to attend! Engineering Career Fair: February 19th, 11am-4pm

Many of the employers at these job fairs will be conducting interviews the day after the event.  So remember to bring your up to date resume and dress your best at the winter career fairs!

Happy Week 5 College of Forestry!

Are you interested in leadership opportunities?  Here is an exciting new opportunity for Oregon State University undergraduate students:

The Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) is an international research study focused on understanding the influences of higher education in shaping socially responsible leadership capacity and other leadership related outcomes (e.g., efficacy, cognitive skills, and resiliency). The MSL is one of the largest studies of undergraduate college student leadership* to date. OSU is only one of 250 campuses world-wide who will participate in the upcoming 2015 study.

The goal of the MSL is to increase student participation.  Over 4000 undergraduate students have been invited to participate and are entered to win gift cards worth up to $500.

OSU wants to hear your story! Your participation in the MSL survey will directly shape how OSU helps all students find opportunities to do things that matter and positively transform our world.

Are you looking for a summer internship?  Or perhaps a job after you graduate in the spring?

Employers from multiple companies will be on campus in the upcoming weeks, ready to network with you and perhaps even schedule an interview!  Make sure to mark the following dates on your calendars:

• January 22: Lone Rock Timber will be in Peavy 256 from 5:00-6:30 pm, pizza will be provided.  They have several internships and full time positions.  Interview sign-up sheets are located in the Student Services Office, Pvy 250, for interviews on Jan. 23rd.
• January 26: Plum Creek will be in Peavy 256 from 5:00-6:00 pm.  Attend the session to learn about interview opportunities that are scheduled for Jan. 27th.
• January 27: Olympic Resource Management will be in Peavy 256 from 5:00-6:00 pm.  Pizza will be provided.
• January 28: Stimson Lumber will be in Peavy 256 from 6:30-7:30.  Pizza will be provided.
• February 3: Linn County Parks & Recreation will be in Peavy 276 from 10:30-11:30 AM.

Also note that Tuesday, February 3rd is the SAF Job Fair from 10 am to 3 pm, located in the Richardson Knuckles.

• Idaho Department of Lands will be visiting the SAF Job Fair on Feb. 3rd, and conducting interviews on Feb. 4th.  Job descriptions for summer/seasonal positions and interview sign-up sheets are available at the Student Services Office, Pvy 250.

Even if you are a freshman this year, you are welcome and encouraged to attend these events. Employers notice the people that show up each year to the job fair and they get to know them that much better!

College can be overwhelming, to say the least.  Your schedule varies day to day, there’s tests scattered randomly around, it’s really easy to forget the little assignments mentioned in class, and sometimes it just gets to be too much trying to remember everything.  Even using a paper planner, sometimes it gets forgotten at home when something new is assigned in class.  If this sounds like what happens to you, check out My Study Life!
