Students and aircraft aficionados recently gathered for a distinguished lecture featuring Paul Bevilaqua, the former chief engineer in Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works. Hosted by the OSU chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the lectured featured Bevilaqua’s in-depth discussion of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, developed to meet the multirole fighter requirements of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and allies. Bevilaqua spoke about the challenges involved in developing aircraft and how it has become an international program, with many engineers developing a single replacement aircraft for multiple aircraft types.

The Oregon State University campus swelled as thousands of students moved into residence halls last week. Steven Ruzicka, a freshman in the College of Engineering, was one of those students. He moved into Wilson Hall in preparation for his first year at Oregon State.

The walking, running, and jumping bipedal robot, ATRIAS, is becoming more mobile by the minute and has made its way to the Royal Veterinary College at the University of London. Developed by researchers at the College of Engineering, ATRIAS has been hanging out in London with the feathered friends that inspired its design: guinea fowl, emus, and more. Similar to a bird, the robot could not be contained to the indoors and explored the English countryside. Read more about ATRIAS’s adventures in London here.

Update: The Oregon State University Solar Vehicle Team placed first in the 2013 Formula Sun Grand Prix. OSU took the race by driving 193 laps (656 miles) around the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on pure solar energy! See below for more information on the team’s trip to Texas and the competition.

The Oregon State Solar Vehicle Team (OSUSVT) is headed to Austin, Texas for the 2013 Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP), an international track race. Open to teams from around the world, this unique style of solar car racing tests the limits of the vehicles in handling curves, braking, and acceleration.

The winner of FSGP is determined by the total number of laps completed over three days of racing. But the event is more than just competing for a win. Before the race, solar vehicle teams work together with fellow competitors and inspectors to insure the safety of their vehicles, a process known as scrutineering. Continue reading →

Every year, Engineering Expo attendees can explore the many senior capstone projects and then vote for their favorite one—earning one team the coveted People’s Choice Award. This year, however, two teams from Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) tied for the award. Sandra Woods, dean of the College of Engineering; and Peter Johnson (’55), grand marshal of the Expo, presented this year’s honors. Continue reading →
