Project lead: Dr. Shannon Lipscomb, OSU-Cascades

This was a project of the Oregon School Readiness Consortium, with support from the Ford Family Foundation.

In this project we examined how characteristics of the communities in which young children and families live help us to understand the overall school readiness of children within those communities at the school, district, and county levels.

The current project utilized Oregon Kindergarten Assessment (KA) data from the 2014-2015 school year. Risks and resources within communities predicted scores on all four outcome areas (self-regulation, interpersonal skills, literacy, and math).

The paper was published in Prevention Science in March, 2019. A copy of the pre-published version is available here.

A policy brief of earlier work on this project is available here

Members of the working group for this project included Dr. Shannon Lipscomb (OSU-Cascades), Dr. Katherine Pears (Oregon Social Learning Center), Dr. Bridget Hatfield (OSU), Dr. Brianne Kothari (OSU-Cascades), Alicia Miao (PhD student), & Jenn Finders (PhD student).

Our team also presented preliminary findings from this project in July, 2016 in Washington, D.C., at the Administration for Children and Families National Research Conference on Early Childhood. The poster presentation can be viewed here:
