Research and Database Development

Research on the topic

For my research on Gender and Technology, I primarily relied on 2 sources – Google Scholar and JSTOR. I used the search terms ‘Gender and Technology’; ‘Women in Science’; ‘Women in Technology’; ‘Women in Engineering’. From the search results, I collected articles in the following categories:

  • A historical view on Women in STEM fields
  • A global perspective on Women in STEM fields
  • The role of stereotypes in the gender gap
  • The role of academia in the gender gap
  • Gender and the workplace

The goal of this research is to a) understand the sociocultural underpinnings of the gender gap in STEM fields, and b) learn about the role that academic institutions play in promoting STEM careers among women.

Storage, notation, and citation process and tools used

I used Zotero to manage and store all the research data. Zotero has a Chrome plugin that makes it very easy to bookmark resources from the browser. The browser plugin automatically detects that I am looking at a research resource and with a single click, transfers all relevant information to the Zotero app that I’ve installed on my Windows 7 laptop. It also creates a local copy of the original PDF/HTML file if it is available. I can add tags and/or notes to each resource which can later be used to search for matching resources. Zotero has a simple menu option for creating citations and bibliography in the format of my choosing.
