Natural Resources Extension \u2013 Benton, Linn &amp; Polk Counties<\/em><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>It is never really too early to think about fire season.\u00a0 With fire season comes rules and regulations that affect both the general public and forest landowners.\u00a0 Nearly everyone is affected by some, such as rules for <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/treetopics\/2013\/07\/02\/fire-season-is-upon-us\/\">basic fire tools to be carried <\/a>when driving on forest roads during regulated use \u00a0as reported last summer.<\/p>\n<p>If you operate during fire season, then there are other specific rules regarding fire prevention and preparedness that will apply to you. \u00a0These roles address water supply and fire equipment, fire watch and preventative actions and steps that are meant to prevent wildfire and protect landowners from fire damage, injury and fire cost liability.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>ODF foresters regularly visit operations to check on fire rules compliance.\u00a0 Deficiencies typically lead to warnings, but if left unaddressed, may lead to citations, fines and in rare cases may leave landowners liable for all fire suppression costs.<\/p>\n<p>I recently saw results for the ODF West Oregon District (predominantly in Lincoln, Benton and Polk Counties) of 132 compliance inspections of active operations in 2013.\u00a0 The good news is that\u00a0 79% passed.\u00a0 But there were fairly big differences between the results on Industrial lands, Federal lands and nonindustrial lands.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just say that operators on family forest lands are not leading the class, with just 69% passing.\u00a0 That means that nearly a third of operations on family forestlands were not up to snuff.\u00a0 Critical deficiencies revealed\u00a0 include inadequate pumps, too little water and not enough\u00a0 fire hose and inadequate maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the small landowner numbers represent two groups:\u00a0 \u00a0those who are doing their own operation, so need to have their own fire equipment on site, and those who hire an operator and so are depending on that operator to keep them in compliance.\u00a0 From what I understand, neither group is making the Dean\u2019s list.<\/p>\n<p>As a whole, you could call it a passing grade I guess\u2026 a D+.\u00a0 But that is not the kind of grade we want to see on our kids\u2019 report cards, nor does it represent the level of preparedness we would like to see in the small woodlands community.\u00a0 It is important to try to improve that situation.<\/p>\n<p>Look for other articles on this topic soon, and watch for\u00a0workshops in Benton and Polk Counties in early summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_941\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px;\">\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/treetopics\/files\/2014\/03\/fire-picture-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-941\" alt=\"ODF photo\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/treetopics\/files\/2014\/03\/fire-picture-1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/714\/files\/2014\/03\/fire-picture-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/714\/files\/2014\/03\/fire-picture-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">ODF photo<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Brad Withrow-Robinson, OSU Forestry &amp;
