Batman

“Always be yourself unless you can be Batman.  Then always be Batman.”  This is the segue into my NCCE 2014 presentation.  The basic concept of the presentation is giving underrepresented students a voice, bringing out the super hero in them, and allowing them to speak on topics of interest to them through the use of emerging technologies. The inspiration of this presentation is from the Oregon Migrant Leadership Institutions (OMLI) I’ve participated in at OSU for the past five summers.  The presentation includes high school participant video and blog examples from the OMLI and reflects on tech integration from the perspective of a learning educator.  Check out the Prezi presentation, and let me know if you’re interested in knowing more about the program or tech used to give learners a voice.

Moving Toward Universal Design

 Though the term “universal design” has been used since the ‘70s, full application of the principles of universal design to teaching and learning in higher education is still very much in process. Martha Smith and Gabe Merrell, two OSU campus leaders in universal design and accessibility, met with the College of Education Hybrid Study Group on March 5 to discuss universal design for instruction. Martha is Director of Disability Access Services, and Gabe is Senior Accessibility Associate and Deputy ADA Coordinator in the Office of Equity and Inclusion.

Gabe and Martha emphasized the importance of considering universal design up front in the development of teaching materials, instructional methods and means to assess student learning. They also noted that universal design benefits all learners. The principles of universal design offer guidance for the design of all elements of an instructor’s toolkit, from syllabi to presentation style, to class activities and exams. As OSU serves an increasingly diverse student population, universal design can enhance learning in the classroom, the lab, in the field, and online.

SMART Board Software and Support

We will seek your input on how these sessions are developed.  In the meantime, if you wish to schedule an individual session or have TAC come into your class, contact Kimmy Hescock.

Software: Want to work on SMART Board lessons on your own computer away from the SMART Board?  Download the SMART Board software here. Under SMART Notebook Collaborative Learning Software, it says, “Choose a Version.”  Choose 11.4 for Windows. Choose 11.4 for Mac.

SMART Board Resources:  Explore and download resources here on the Exchange Lessons site. SMART Tech Training offers free training resources you can take in your own time.

Tech’d Out Learning SMART Board Resources:  Under the Resources tab at the top of this site, there is a SMART Boards tab for easy access to resource information.

Ideas for Assignments Using Social & Mobile Tools

Social Teaching by Design offers half a dozen sample assignments–flipbooks, mindmaps, photoquotes, infographics, flashcards and social bookmarking–along with info about appropriate tools for student collaboration.  This article was recommended by Karen Watte, Ecampus faculty and course development specialist, on the Ecampus diigo (social bookmarking) site that indexes more than 200 links dealing with resources, research and tools for blended and online teaching and learning.

Beginning Conversations

At the licensure meeting in January, I shared the Alan November video below along with a Prezi presentation entitled Beginning Conversations.  If you missed either of these or would like to explore more on your own time, here’s an opportunity.

Hybrid Study Group March 19th

http://www.flickr.com/photos/snre/5114827205/Our last hybrid study group session was a lively discussion about Universal Design led by Gabriel Merrell, Interim Associate Director in the OSU Office of Equity and Inclusion and Martha Smith, Director of Disability Access Service.

Join us March 19th from 10-11:30 in Furman 405.  Cub Kahn from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will wrap up our sessions with some additional hybrid related resources, such as Quality Matters.  We will discuss potential opportunities and collaborations with the CTL.  Come for discussion and refreshments!

Spring Ecampus Faculty Forum

http://www.flickr.com/photos/caroslines/3233935386/sizes/q/Join me at the Ecampus Spring Faculty Forum on April 17th.  I’ll be a part of a panel entitled Create active learning in the online classroom at 11:00.  The forum runs from 8:00 am, starting with breakfast, to 4:15 with an iPad mini give-away.  See the complete schedule and register.  I’ve presented and attended for the past few years and have benefitted from doing so.  I’ve always walked away with new ideas for my online courses and enjoyed networking with other instructors across campus.  See you there!

Blackboard and Canvas

51723129_ed620f2c5e_qThe two finalists for the OSU Learning Management System are Blackboard and Canvas.  The version of Blackboard under consideration is a later version and has some differences compared to what we are currently using.  The committee is currently recruiting instructors to teach in a sandbox site Spring term 2014.  If you are interested, more information can be found here.  The deadline is March 10th, 2014.

Introduction to SMART Board Winter Sessions

Tuesday, March 4th from 9-10am in Furman 405 (Led by Jon Dorbolo & Andrea Mcfarland)
