This data includes measuring PAH mixtures in environmental samples, determining toxicity of PAH mixtures, and the mechanism(s) of action for these toxic endpoints.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/superfund.oregonstate.edu\/bio\" target=\"_blank\">Biostatistics and Modeling Core<\/a>, lead by<strong> Dr. Katrina Waters,<\/strong> greatly enhances our Center by providing expert statistical and bioinformatics data analysis support and software solutions for data management and interpretation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnl.gov\/science\/staff\/staff_info.asp?staff_num=7044\" target=\"_blank\">Katrina Waters<\/a><\/strong> recently became the Deputy Director for the Biological Sciences Division at the Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL). Her expertise is in computational biology, and she works collaboratively with all of the <a title=\"OSU SRP Research Projects\" href=\"http:\/\/superfund.oregonstate.edu\/research\" target=\"_blank\">research projects<\/a> and co-authors with them.<\/p>\n<p>This multidisciplinary training of toxicology students and fellows at OSU and PNNL is a unique strength of our program. Our <a title=\"OSU SRP Trainees\" href=\"http:\/\/superfund.oregonstate.edu\/trainees\" target=\"_blank\">SRP Trainees<\/a> have benefited greatly from the PNNL partnership.\u00a0 Students have gone to the lab in Richland, WA to be trained in <em>Bioinformatics, Statistics and Study Design. <\/em>More training workshops are being scheduled for this summer and fall.<\/p>\n<p>Waters presented at SOT&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toxicology.org\/ai\/meet\/cct_futureToxII.asp\" target=\"_blank\">FutureTox II: In Vitro Data and In Silico Models for Predictive Toxicology<\/a> on January 16, 2014. Her talk was entitled <em>Computational Tools for Integration of High Throughout Screening (HTS) Data<\/em>. She utilized examples from the collaboration with Robert Tanguay and his zebrafish assay for toxicity testing (<a href=\"http:\/\/superfund.oregonstate.edu\/project3\" target=\"_blank\">Project 3<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_475\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignleft\" style=\"width: 135px;\">\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/superfund\/files\/2014\/01\/susantilton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-475 \" alt=\"Susan Tilton\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/superfund\/files\/2014\/01\/susantilton.jpg\" width=\"135\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan Tilton works with Dr. Katrina Waters and the OSU SRP Biostatistics and Modeling Core Group<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Susan Tilton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnnl.gov\/science\/staff\/staff_info.asp?staff_num=7367\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dr. Susan Tilton<\/strong>,<\/a> also from PNNL,\u00a0 presented at FutureTox as well. The title of her presentation was \u2018Pathway-based prediction of tumor outcome for environmental PAH mixtures\u2019.\u00a0 In this study, they developed a mechanism-based approach for prediction of tumor outcome after dermal exposure to PAHs and environmental PAH mixtures.\u00a0 Their model was successfully utilized to distinguish early regulatory events during initiation linked to tumor outcome and shows the utility of short-term initiation studies in predicting the carcinogenic potential of PAHs and PAH mixtures.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cDr. Waters and her group have proven to be of great value in not just the interpretation of extremely large and complicated data sets, but also in the \u201cfront-end\u201d study design, which results in enrichment of the subsequent data obtained.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Dr. David Williams, OSU SRP Center Director<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Center is multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional.
