{"id":354,"date":"2005-08-10T16:00:16","date_gmt":"2005-08-11T00:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/spotlight\/?p=354"},"modified":"2010-03-22T13:24:29","modified_gmt":"2010-03-22T21:24:29","slug":"a-world-of-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/spotlight\/2005\/08\/10\/a-world-of-research\/","title":{"rendered":"A world of research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As an OSU undergraduate, Nick Ehlers has been involved in research projects in Panama, the Bahamas, and Newport, Oregon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_355\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignright\" style=\"width: 229px;\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-355\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/spotlight\/files\/2010\/03\/Ehlers2_p2.jpg\" alt=\"Nick Ehlers highlights his research as one of his most memorable college experiences\" width=\"229\" height=\"182\" \/>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nick Ehlers highlights his research as one of his most memorable college experiences<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<p>Nick Ehlers had the opportunity to do research in a wide range of places as an Oregon State University undergraduate student majoring in biology.<\/p>\n<p>With funding from OSU&#8217;s International Undergraduate Research Program, Nick traveled to Panama and the Bahamas to work as a research assistant alongside OSU faculty members Bruce Menge and Mark Hixon. &#8220;Both were such amazing experiences,&#8221; Nick says. &#8220;It was a classroom with no walls and everything and everybody was my professor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, as part of the marine biology option, Nick had the opportunity to live on-site at OSU&#8217;s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. The 16-week marine biology course offers students field and laboratory experiences with a variety of instructors, including Sally Hacker, associate professor of zoology, pictured with him above. &#8220;This program was one of the reasons that I chose Oregon State,&#8221; Nick says.<\/p>\n<p>For the coming year, Nick has accepted a job as a science instructor at the Ocean Institute at Dana Point, California. &#8220;This will combine my love of science, research, and education,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The three highlights of my college career have been my research, my fraternity, and my involvement in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program,&#8221; Nick says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/biology.science.oregonstate.edu\/\">OSU biology program<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hmsc.oregonstate.edu\/\">Hatfield Marine Science Center<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.oregonstate.edu\/OptionDetail.aspx?code=572&amp;majorid=224\">Marine Biology at HMSC<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/%7Ehixonm\/index.htm\">Mark Hixon website<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocean-institute.org\/\">Dana Point Ocean Institute<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As an OSU undergraduate, Nick Ehlers has been involved in research projects in Panama, the Bahamas, and Newport, Oregon.
