3A Structures for Wildlife
Biologists from NRCS will take you through their various specifications for wildlife structures – everything from creating brush piles to installing snake hibernacula! Topics will include considerations of where to place structures, how to maintain them, and how to install protection from predators. In addition, part of the session will include a demonstration of how to follow a specification to build a bird nesting box (and a bat box, time allowing).

4A Variety Selection and Trialing
What variety to choose to grow on your farm? Selecting varieties can be daunting when you open a seed catalog with dozens of choices in each vegetable category. Variety trialing is a useful tool for farmers to find the best varieties for their unique environmental conditions and market needs. This presentation will include the process of planning, implementing, evaluating, and interpreting a variety trial.

Doug will share his research on tools and techniques for high residue reduced tillage options for vegetable farmers west of the Cascades.

7A/B Compost
Join Matt and Nick to learn about the art and science of composting. You will learn how to handle different types of feedstock, estimate C/N ratio, and build compost piles that will heat up and decompose efficiently. We will also discuss the composting process, turned windrows and aerated static piles, compost quality and nutrient content. In the field you will learn to estimate moisture content by feel, bulk density, pile volume and application rate.

This is a double-session you will not register for a Session B class. There will be an exhibitor break and morning snack from 10:00 to 10:30 am.
