Strategies for Managing Insects

This class will use ecologically based-integrated pest management techniques to help you develop the skills you need to create a pest management plan for your farm. The workshop will be two parts, with an in-class portion discussing the PAMS framework—prevention, avoidance, monitoring and suppression. We will also look at key management strategies, insect life cycles, and types of damage caused by various pests. During the second portion of the workshop we will head outdoors to the student farm to look for and identify beneficial insects and learn how to create and enhance beneficial insect habitat on your farm.

This is a double-session you will not register for a Session C class. There will be a lunch break from 12:00 to 1:15 pm with opportunities to visit with Exhibitors and Experts

4B  Class Full Soil Biology & Health in Small-Scale Veggie Production

Explore the fascinating and important world of soil biology and farm practices that can nurture it. Caring for your soil biology improves soil health and can increase crop productivity and sequester carbon. Jen will explore methods including no till, mulching, occultation (tarping), cover crops, and compost that can improve your soil biology in a small scale vegetable production context.

5B  Cover Crops for Soil Health

Participants will learn about cover crops, what they are used for, and why they are important. We’ll have live demonstrations of the different species and varieties recommended for the Willamette Valley and will discuss cover crop establishment, management, and incorporation using organic methods.

6B  Living with your Domestic Well

When you live in the country or just outside city limits, there is a lot behind turning the faucet on and filling your glass of water. Learn the basics of protecting your water quality, testing (including requirements for Oregon’s Real Estate Transaction rule), and about how poor water quality can affect your health. We will also cover a bit on water rights, well construction, well logs, and how your septic system can influence your well water quality. If you would like to test your well water (free of charge!) for nitrates please bring a 1/2 cup sample in a sealed and labeled container.
