{"id":5072,"date":"2017-12-09T08:55:16","date_gmt":"2017-12-09T16:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/?p=5072"},"modified":"2017-12-09T08:55:16","modified_gmt":"2017-12-09T16:55:16","slug":"5072","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/2017\/12\/09\/5072\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting out as Malouf Scholar, ODFW Marine Team, and deep-sea research on the Okeanos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every day I get to go out on the Ocean I feel like the luckiest person in the world!<\/p>\n<p>I was in Portland OR, attending the Ecological Society of America (ESA) meeting, when I first heard the good news that I had gotten the <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.oregonstate.edu\/education\/sea-grant-scholars\/fellowships-internships\/robert-e-malouf-marine-studies-scholarship\"><strong>Malouf Marine Studies Scholarship<\/strong><\/a>! I could not believe it, and was so exited. I ran all over the Oregon Convention Center, trying to find my adviser to tell him the good news! I finally had the funding to start doing field work and begin my PhD research.<\/p>\n<p>During September I had my first chance to go out with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/oregonmarinereserves.com\/\">Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Marine Reserves Team<\/a><\/strong>, and learn how their Hook and Line survey methods works. A method I plan to use as part of my research.\u00a0 I learned so much those few days I was out there with ODFW&#8217;s David Wagman (also known as Wolfe, bottom left). I need to finish writing all my permit application in the winter in order to be ready to hit the ground running next year.<\/p>\n<p>NOAA scholarships have given me the opportunities I would have never even dream possible. Just like<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.oregonstate.edu\/\">Oregon Sea Grant<\/a><\/strong> is part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seagrant.noaa.gov\/\"><strong>NOAA Sea Grant College program<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0, so is another scholarship that has greatly impacted my life, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fosterscholars.noaa.gov\/aboutscholarship.html\"><strong>Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship<\/strong>,<\/a> from NOAA&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/sanctuaries.noaa.gov\/\"><strong> Office of National Marine Sanctuaries<\/strong><\/a>. I&#8217;m currently serving aboard the NOAA ship Okeanos in the Gulf of Mexico, as part of a program collaboration opportunity that was given to me as a Dr. Nancy Foster scholar. Science Co-lead Dr. Diva Amon, Expedition Coordinator Brian Kennedy, and I\u00a0will be there to answer everyone questions!
