Down Syndrome, a genetic condition, changes the course of development in individuals. In addition to some of the physical characteristics associated with the condition, many persons with Down syndrome had difficulty with language and speaking. the KLT scholarship program provides financial support to encourage people with down syndrome to pursue educational opportunities that might be otherwise unavailable to them.

Hearing loss can have a negative effect on academic performance, and that effect can be profound. Typically, students with a hearing impairment may experience difficulties with certain school subjects (for example grammar, spelling and vocabulary). They may also have problems taking notes, participating in class discussions, and making oral presentations, among other difficulties. These scholarships are intended to provide assistance that will allow hearing impaired students to continue their education.
