We’ve made good use of our virtual frequent flier miles over the past few weeks! Jetting from Japan <\/a>to Denmark <\/a>for two great big new Flickr Commons sets.<\/p>\n

The first set of images from Japan<\/a>, taken and used in lectures during the early part of the 20th century, are both gorgeously hand-colored and delightfully informative!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some amazing images of Tokyo <\/a>and city life, but you’ll also find some shots of the countryside <\/a>— including that famous Mt. Fuji<\/a>!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There are also bridges <\/a>and a even a few Buddhas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There are people learning<\/a> & people in costumes<\/a>, people playing<\/a> & people worshiping<\/a>. You’ll also find lovely images of Geishas<\/a> and Buddhist priests, as well as historic art pictures (mainly pottery<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Quite a few things made me happy in the Archives, but the second set — hand-colored slides from Denmark<\/a> — topped the list this week…<\/p>\n

It’s an eclectic collection<\/a> from the early portion of the 20th century, but one that really captures the spirit of a beautiful country. And who doesn’t love a windmill<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Want to see a Technicolor yellow of a restaurant scene<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Or the thatched roofs of countryside homes<\/a> or a transplanted house from Iceland<\/a>? Factories for butter<\/a>, eggs<\/a>, bacon<\/a>? Yes, we have shots of those! You\u2019ll also find cows, farms, fertilizer<\/a>, and a few fields of sugar beets<\/a>…<\/p>\n

Schools<\/a>, principals<\/a>, libraries<\/a>? You\u2019ll find those as well!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Speaking of learning, check out a wonderful statue of Hans Christian Andersen<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

or the Lyngby Agricultural Museum<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
