The Pacific Fishery History Project seeks to look at the development of fishing in the Pacific Ocean. While fisheries developed slowly over the centuries in the Atlantic, development was much more compressed in the Pacific, especially after World War II. There were native and regional fisheries that were economically important much earlier, but it was not until the 1930s and Japanese and American fishermen began the rapid development of one of he world’s more important fisheries, for high-seas tunas. We hope this website is a start towards bringing together a community of individuals who are interested in these issues, by giving them a place to both find and post information.
