{"id":677,"date":"2012-11-19T16:57:38","date_gmt":"2012-11-19T23:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/?p=677"},"modified":"2015-07-22T10:29:26","modified_gmt":"2015-07-22T17:29:26","slug":"france-university-of-poitiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/france-university-of-poitiers\/","title":{"rendered":"France: University of Poitiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a title=\"Larry Becker profile\" href=\"http:\/\/ceoas.oregonstate.edu\/profile\/beckerlc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Larry Becker<\/a> is an Associate Professor in Geography and Director of the <a title=\"Environmental Science major\" href=\"http:\/\/envsci.science.oregonstate.edu\/undergrad\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Program<\/a> at Oregon State University.\u00a0 He spent a sabbatical year, August 2010 &#8211; July 2011, at the <a title=\"OUS University of Poitiers exchange program\" href=\"http:\/\/oregonabroad.ous.edu\/countries\/france\/poitiers\/poitiers.html\" target=\"_blank\">University of Poitiers<\/a> in west-central France as a visiting scholar. Below he shares a brief glimpse into his life abroad.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/IntlDinnerAtResidence.Poitiers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-690\" style=\"border: 5px solid white\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/IntlDinnerAtResidence.Poitiers-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From our university apartment for visiting researchers, my wife (Oregon State Geography instructor <a title=\"Laurie Becker profile\" href=\"http:\/\/ceoas.oregonstate.edu\/profile\/beckerlo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laurie Yokoyama Becker<\/a>) and our 12-year old daughter (Malia) looked over rooftops, across the shallow Clain River to the Roman era city center of Poitiers.<\/p>\n<p>Sunrises and sunsets reflected on the faces of the 900-year-old Notre Dame La Grande.\u00a0 This view resembled what the attacking Protestants would have seen in the late 16<sup>th<\/sup> century depicted in a wall-sized painting from the 1620s in the city museum.\u00a0 A strong sense of place is ever-present!<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/NotreDame-la-Grande.Poitiers2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-716\" style=\"border: 5px solid white\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/NotreDame-la-Grande.Poitiers2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/260\/files\/2012\/11\/NotreDame-la-Grande.Poitiers2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/260\/files\/2012\/11\/NotreDame-la-Grande.Poitiers2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/260\/files\/2012\/11\/NotreDame-la-Grande.Poitiers2-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Malia walked daily to school in the center\u2014passing near the site of an enormous Roman amphitheater and a street that 800 years earlier was gated at night separating the Jewish residents from the surrounding Christian population.<\/p>\n<p>The streets of today, though, caught her eye, with mouth-watering \u00e9clairs in windows and narrow passageways to share with cars.\u00a0 I walked away from the city center in the opposite direction past a prison where French resistance fighters died during the WWII German occupation, and Walmart-sized mega-stores to the 1960s-era campus.\u00a0 My colleagues in the Migration Studies Center where my office was located welcomed me and invited me to lunch for the best cafeteria food\u2014choices of fresh fish, <em>boeuf bourguignon,<\/em> and salads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/Presentation11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-717\" style=\"border: 5px solid white\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/Presentation11-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a>For research, I traveled to <a title=\"SIT Mali program page\" href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/international\/studyabroad\/programs\/mali\/sit-mali-health-gender-and-community-empowerment\" target=\"_blank\">Mali<\/a>.\u00a0 I interviewed villagers outside the capital Bamako to understand changes in their livelihoods.\u00a0 The biggest change I found in a village where I lived 25 years ago, is that the sorghum and millet farmers are selling their ancestral land to urban speculators and those seeking a retirement home.<\/p>\n<p>I flew to the north on the edge of the Sahara to visit Timbuktu with a German aid agency that invited me to visit a rice farming project.\u00a0 Laurie remained in Poitiers teaching Oregon State E-campus courses from our apartment.\u00a0 Returning to France, my family and I traveled by train to Toulouse, the Italian coast, Rome, Naples, and the Carnival in Venice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/Timbuktu.SankoreMosque.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-689 alignnone\" style=\"border: 5px solid white\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/osuabroad\/files\/2012\/11\/Timbuktu.SankoreMosque-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Quelle ann\u00e9e!\u00a0 We met Oregon State students on a <a title=\"International Degree and Education Abroad homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/international\/studyabroad\" target=\"_blank\">study abroad<\/a> in Poitiers.\u00a0 This is an experience for Oregon State students and faculty alike.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Larry Becker is an Associate Professor in Geography and Director of the Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Program at Oregon State University.\u00a0 He spent a sabbatical year, August 2010 &#8211;
