Peace Corps

Twenty percent of the Peace Corps’ 3,500 volunteer openings each year are in the public health sector.  The agency is always on the lookout for people with undergraduate and graduate degrees in public health. Most people are aware of the Peace Corps and its 27-month assignments in more than 60 countries around the world. But many aren’t aware that upon return from Peace Corps service, volunteers have a letter of non-competitive eligibility for federal government jobs. This translates to preferred hiring status for Peace Corps volunteers at agencies like the Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health, US Public Health Service, the VA, etc. In addition, returned volunteers are eligible for graduate school fellowships at more than 200 university programs in the U.S.

OSU’s Peace Corps recruiter, Scot Roskelley, will be on campus Feb. 14-16 to meet with students, give class talks, and conduct an info session. The info session is Wednesday, Feb. 14, at noon in Strand 162. If you can’t make the info session but would like to meet one-on-one with him to learn more about Peace Corps service, send him a message at sroskelley@peacecorps.gov to set up an appointment. Roskelley encourages even freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to find out more about Peace Corps service, because students can do many things early in their college careers that will make them more competitive when they apply during their senior year. Each year, there are 24,000 applicants for the roughly 3,500 openings.

All of Us (National Institutes of Health)

The National Alliance for Hispanic Health has reached out to OSU to collaborate in the All of Us campaign. All of Us is part of the Precision Medicine Initiative being led by the National Institutes of Health with partners around the country. The All of Us Journey is a hands-on experience to build awareness and excitement about the All of Us Research Program, supported by the National Institutes of Health. NIH has an All of Us mobile unit that both explains the research program and offers individuals the opportunity to join this landmark research project that will accelerate research and improve health. The goal is that one million or more people will join All of Us. NIH is asking people from all over the United States to join All of Us so the research reflects the diversity of our country.

The mobile unit will be on the OSU campus parked in the Brick Mall (off the NE corner of the Memorial Union) on Thursday, February 15, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to visit the All of Us Journey – to learn more about the Precision Medicine Initiative.
