2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium

Registration for the 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium is now open! This symposium, hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and the Arts, provides undergraduates with an excellent opportunity to showcase their research or creative activity. OSU undergraduates in all years of study, all academic disciplines, and all stages of research or creative work (including works in progress) are eligible to present. Students will be able to choose whether they would like to present a poster and/or a 3-minute lightning talk. Students with artistic/creative projects and distance students are also invited to present. The event will take place on the morning and afternoon of Thursday, September 19th (exact time and location TBA). The deadline to register is August 23rd at 11:59pm. Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium

First-Year Spanish Course Offering for Summer 2019

Complete all of the 1st year Spanish series (SPAN 111, 112, 113) and increase your Spanish proficiency with this 8-week, on-campus summer course offering! SPAN 117: First-Year Spanish (CRN: 73811) will meet 3 hours per day from June 24-August 16. The course will provide students with a smaller class size for more personalized instruction and an immersive environment to increase language retention and fluency. SPAN 117 is equivalent to SPAN 111, 112 and 113, fulfils the BS language requirement and fulfils the first year of the two year BA, MA and PhD requirement. Questions? LIFE Scholars Program Applications Open for Summer 2019

The Summer LIFE Scholars Program provides an opportunity for students to work with a Center for Healthy Aging Research faculty member to develop research skills and an understanding of opportunities in science and research. LIFE Scholars must be enrolled for Fall Term 2019 or intend to complete a degree at Oregon State University. The application deadline is Friday, May 31 at 4:40pm. Selection announcements will go out on Monday, June 3, 2019. Research Opportunity in CPHHS

The OSU Human-Animal Interactions Lab and the Children and Youth with Disabilities Lab are currently seeking volunteers to assist with an animal-assisted therapy research project on campus this summer.  This project involves working directly with dogs and youth with and without developmental disabilities (ages 8-17), helping teach the youth how to understand their dog’s body language and how to train and play with their dogs.  No prior experience necessary. This is a unique and highly rewarding experience for all involved!  This opportunity will require commitment between Monday, August 5 and Friday August 30th. Interested in getting involved? Summer 2019 Course Offerings for Environmental and Occupational Health Students

Are you a student studying Environmental and Occupational Health, or interested in studying policy and science related to agriculture? Check out these course offerings!

ENSC 540:  Environmental Science Perspectives  on the Future of Food (CRN: 74568) is a four-credit ECampus course being offered from June 24-September 6. Students will holistically examine the provision of food through the links among soil, water, and the atmosphere and learn how emerging environmental science is providing important insights and innovative solutions to produce more food sustainably for growing populations. Students will also conduct individual research and share the results as a group.

PPOL 447/547: Integrated Policy Approaches to Food, Energy, Water, and Climate (CRN: 74685/74700) is a four-credit ECampus course being offered from June 24-September 6. This transdisciplinary course will examine emerging integrated policies concerning sustainable provision of food, energy, and water and their relationship to climate. Students will conduct an interdisciplinary analysis of contemporary environmental policy issues connecting food, energy, water, and climate, and end the course with a conference style series of presentations to share learning outcomes from the course.

Hattie Redmond Women and Gender Center Clothing Swap

Pick up or drop off gently used clothing at Hattie Redmond Women & Gender Center! The Center is accepting clothing donations of all gender identities, ages, and sizes. The clothing swap will take place from 9-5pm on Wednesday, May 22 to Wednesday June 5.  

OSU 2019 Commencement Information

Commencement is right around the corner– mark your calendars for these upcoming events! A reception for all CPHHS graduates and their guests will be held on Friday, June 14 at HFC, 1pm-2:30pm. There will be a photo booth and gifts for graduates, and free Kona Ice for graduates and their guests.

The CPHHS Hooding Ceremony for master’s and PhD students will take place at 3pm on Friday, June 14 in Linc 128.  The ceremony will be addressed by OSU Women’s Basketball coach and CPHHS alumnus Scott Rueck. The 2019 Commencement ceremony for all graduates will begin at 10:30am on Saturday, June 15. President Ray invites graduates and members of their families and guests to a reception at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center Ballroom immediately following the ceremony.

KidSpirit Program

KidSpirit links knowledge from Oregon State University to community youth in an environment that creates service and learning opportunities for participants and volunteers alike. KidSpirit staff study and demonstrate effective teaching strategies and professionalism, and learn life skills that increase their confidence and self-esteem, enabling them to enter the workplace as leaders.

For participants, a health, physical activity, science and a creative arts curriculum created and implemented by KidSpirit staff improve the skills, lifestyle and social development of children of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds. Activities focus on instruction and skill building, increasing confidence and self-esteem, and fostering personal talents while creating friendships in a safe and positive environment.
