Volunteers Needed for Healthy Athletes Program

What is Healthy Athletes?
This program provides free health screenings in a fun, welcoming environment that removes anxiety that people with intellectual disabilities often face when visiting a doctor.

What would your role be as a volunteer?
You will provide guided health education to athletes through our health promotion discipline! Our health promotion stations include: Nutrition, Physical Activity, Hydration, Hygiene, and Tobacco Prevention/Cessation.

They are recruiting for two shifts of volunteers: 11am-2pm and 2pm-6pm. The event is Saturday, July 14, 2018.

Aspiring Educators Club

The Aspiring Educators Club is a new group in the College of Education to build connections, advocate for current and future education professionals, and connect students with resources they need to be successful before and after graduation. This new club is looking for people to share ideas and get involved in planning events for next year. They hope to collaborate with other clubs, schools, and educational organizations to bring the community together and provide opportunities to truly help the education system in our city, the state of Oregon, and the nation as a whole.

They will be hosting a social Wednesday, May 30, at 5:00 pm in FURM 404 for anyone who is interested in being a part of the club. They will be hanging out, de-stressing before finals and gathering ideas to take into consideration when planning for next year. Anyone with ideas, no matter how big or small, is strongly encouraged to come! Also, there will be free pizza and cookies.

This new student club is a great way to connect with your fellow OSU students who are thinking about a career in the field of education while building community and developing resources!

Personal Support Worker Needed

A part-time position is available taking a 12-year-old boy with special needs into the community for social interaction and helping him work on his core strength (take him hiking, biking, or help him use the equipment at the park or swimming). The provider would work on social communication and appropriate boundary setting. There may be some money, math, or other practical life skills involved as well. At times, there is a 2:1 support if there is a beach or aquarium outing.

It is a great idea to provide your resume because it involves working in the developmental disability community.

Chile Study Abroad Opportunity

Calling all undergraduates! Roger Hammer, Associate Professor in the School of Public Policy, is leading a study abroad program in Chile in Winter 2019 (Jan. 7–Mar. 15). Participants will spend 10 weeks exploring Chilean culture, politics, history, and the natural environment, while living with host families and learning Spanish.

Participants will enroll in two baccalaureate core courses: PS 344 Latin American Politics (Cultural Diversity) and SOC 481: Society and Natural Resources (Science, Technology, and Society), and a Spanish language and culture course. Two years of high school Spanish or one year of college Spanish required.

Roger Hammer will be holding drop-in informational sessions in 208 Bexell hall (the CLA “livingroom”) Monday, June 4, 12-2pm.

National Donut Day

Do you spell it donut or doughnut? Either way, come celebrate this tasty day with Benny’s Donuts, delicious, local donuts made fresh by an OSU alumnus! You’ll learn more about the MBA program at Oregon State and have the opportunity to mingle and network with current MBA students. This is a great opportunity if you are interested in an MBA or have a double major in business or a business minor!

Puerto Rico Service Learning Trip: Reflection and Information Session

In Spring 2016, a group of Oregon State University students traveled to Puerto Rico for a service learning trip. A second trip was held in December of that year, with a focus on creating curriculum for K-12 school agriculture programs in the region.

Program organizers intended to return to Puerto Rico, but in 2017, a devastating hurricane rocked the island, destroying infrastructure and driving many out of their homes. The natural disaster shifted priorities for trip organizers, but also galvanized their desire to return and focus their work on areas that would directly benefit those living under difficult conditions in Puerto Rico.

During the last week of March of this year, 32 students from eight different OSU colleges flew to Puerto Rico for Spring Break to do a variety of projects in conjunction with Puerto Rico’s land grant university, University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez. They worked in the town of San Sebastián, which is in the northwest part of the island. That’s where the Segunda Unidad Bernaldo Mendez Jimenez school is located, and OSU representatives and Mayaguez officials worked closely with school administrators to create a service learning plan that will benefit students there.

The students who went on the service learning trip, will be presenting their projects at the MU Horizon Room on Monday, June 4, 3-4pm. There will also be a 30-minute period when attendees can hear about individual experiences, during the open poster presentation. This event is open to all students, faculty, and staff!

The Society of Healthcare Executives (SHE)

The Society of Healthcare Executives (SHE) is a student-run organization for undergraduate and graduate Healthcare Management and Policy students attending Oregon State University. S.H.E. is dedicated to the student’s professional development by providing education, networking and volunteering opportunities. S.H.E. is focused on connecting students with industry professionals, faculty and other students within the Health Management and Policy Program. S.H.E. is the student’s premier resource within the Healthcare Management and Policy major.

The Society of Healthcare Executives is associated with The Oregon Society of Healthcare Executives (OSHE). The Oregon Society of Healthcare Executives is the American College of Healthcare Executive’s (ACHE) professional society in Oregon.

S.H.E. works closely with ACHCA, the student organization that focuses specifically on the long-term care industry. Dual membership in both S.H.E. and ACHCA is common for HMP majors.
