CPHHS Club Spotlight

Oregon State Society of Healthcare Executives/Society of Healthcare Administrators

The Society of Healthcare Executives (SHE) and the Society of Healthcare Administrators (SHA) are two student-run organizations that have combined efforts to better serve Oregon State University students. This hybrid club provides students interested in healthcare management opportunities for professional development, networking, and volunteer work. SHE/SHA is focused on connecting students with industry professionals, faculty, and other students within the Healthcare Management and Policy Program. SHE/SHA is the premier resource for students within the Healthcare Management and Policy major looking to narrow down their career interests and develop a vast professional network along the way.

The club meets on odd weeks on Tuesdays at 6:00pm in Waldo 400. For more information, contact Ryley Martin (SHE/SHA President) at martinry@oregonstate.edu.

Special Olympics Oregon

Special Olympics Oregon is hosting their summer games at Oregon State University July 8-9th. Alicia Dixon-Ibarra is the OSU site coordinator for the Healthy Athletes program. This program provides free health screenings in a fun, welcoming environment that removes anxiety that people with intellectual disabilities often face when visiting a doctor. They are looking for student volunteers on July 8 from 10am-4pm (lunch provided). Volunteers would provide basic health education and lead interactive games with athletes. This a great opportunity for students to use their public health training and get hands on experience working with individuals with disabilities.

 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity

HDFS 401, Earn 2-3 credits by assisting with two research projects in the FLOW lab.

  • Exploring Family Dynamics in a Family Leisure Context: using innovative methodology, our goal is to advance knowledge about family leisure experiences associated with family interactions, satisfaction, and well-being.
  • Oregon Affordable Care Act (ACA) Case Studies: this is an in-depth qualitative study to understand health experiences of rural families and how changes in healthcare and insurance may have affected the health of rural Oregon residents.

Contact Dr. Kelly Davis to schedule a meeting.

Global Health Advocacy Internship

The Fund for Global Health is a nonprofit advocacy organization that seeks to increase global health funding through grassroots lobbying to members of Congress on the SFOPS Appropriations Committees. Oregon’s Senator, Jeff Merkley, is on the Senate SFOPS Subcommittee of Appropriations, and the Fund for Global Health is looking for community members who are interested in engaging with him and his office. Some of the duties include organizing letter-writing campaigns to Senator Merkley, making phone calls to his office, and seeking to set up meetings with him or his staffers, all to encourage him to increase the SFOPS budget for global maternal and child programs, and programs for tuberculosis and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. This is a great opportunity to learn about global health issues, the Congress appropriations process, and how to become engaged with U.S. policy; it is also a chance to have a global impact. The commitment is 10-15 hours per week for four months, with the opportunity to extend. Contact o.halas@fundforglobalhealth.org or 949-292-0934 for more information.
