Volunteers Needed for Healthy Athlete Program

The Healthy Athlete Program by Special Olympics Oregon is looking for volunteers for March 17! As a volunteer, you provide health education and lead interactive games with athletes. The program provides free health screenings in a fun, welcoming environment that removes anxiety that people with intellectual disabilities often face when visiting a doctor.

Screenings include:
• Fit Feet (podiatry)
• FUNfitness (physical therapy)
• Health Promotion (better health and well-being)
• Healthy Hearing (audiology)
• MedFest (sports physical exam)
• Opening Eyes (vision)
• Special Smiles (dentistry)

Migrant Health Class in Spring

A migrant health class, ES 416, is being offered this spring. The purpose of the class is to present an overview of major health and health care issues related to migrant communities in the United States. From an ecological perspective, students gain an understanding of the theories and realities about migration and the migration-health relationship. In particular, the situation of migrant and seasonal farm workers in the Pacific Northwest is analyzed. Specific topics include: assimilation and acculturation, access to care, protective practices (the so-called Latino paradox), migrant health centers and community health workers, environmental and occupational issues, and immigrant families. The course will investigate relevant policy and ethical issues that surround migration and health. For students pursuing a Medical Humanities Certificate, this course can count toward completion of the electives in the Medical Humanities Certificate.

HDFS Student Club

Do you want to be more involved on campus? Are you interested in Human Services, Childhood Development, or any general HDFS work? Join the HDFS Student Club! Their purpose is to provide networking/professional development and service opportunities to those who wish to participate. The club is a great way to meet students and faculty in the HDFS department, build your résumé, and gain experience for graduate school or work beyond college. Meetings are held at least once a month where students contribute to organizing club events.
