CPHHS Spring Etiquette Dinner and Networking Event

Join the CPHHS Career Development Center for the 2019 Etiquette Dinner and Networking event this spring! Attendees will learn how to make meaningful conversations with professionals while polishing their dining etiquette with an etiquette instructor over a 3-course meal. The event is free for OSU students and will take place on Thursday, April 11 from 6-8pm at Off the Quad in the Memorial Union. Space is limited! Youth Voices in Action Conference Volunteers Needed

The Oregon 4-H Outreach Leadership Institute – Youth Voices in Action Conference for 8th-12th graders from underserved communities is seeking volunteers! This is a unique opportunity for college students age 18-25 interested in working with high school students, and will take place the first half of spring break, Sunday, March 24 to Wednesday, March 27, 2019. This conference focuses on providing students with real-world opportunities to develop their leadership skills, critical thinking skills, and learn about civic engagement. Participants will attend hands-on workshops, tour the Oregon State Capitol, and listen to keynote speakers on various topics. Additionally, they will be put into groups, referred to as Action Teams, to work together to solve a real challenge given to them by various state agencies and organizations. We are seeking help from college students to be the facilitators for these groups! Facilitators will support a group of 8th-12th grade students (an Action Team) as they solve a challenge question from a state agency, guide their transition from group to team and encourage cooperation and participation from all members. Applicants must have the ability to work with diverse groups of people, coach and allow others to be leaders, communicate effectively, mediate conflict, and employ critical thinking. Interested? Volunteer Opportunity with Camp Promise for Summer 2019

Camp Promise is Jett Foundation’s free, week-long, overnight camp for kids, teens, and adults with muscular dystrophy and select neuromuscular diseases. The program is looking for volunteers at their camp in Vaughn, Washington this summer! Available volunteer positions are: counselors, medical staff (license required), logistics, cooks, dishwashers and kitchen assistants, arts ‘n crafts staff, photographers, and program assistants. No previous experience is required. All volunteers will receive extensive training, lodging and meals and a t-shirt. Interested? HDFS Course Offering in OSU Portland Center for Spring 2019

What does it mean to be an adult? When does adulthood begin and how does it progress over the many decades that most of us will experience as we travel through the life course? In what ways do we change and stay the same? How are our experiences of development and aging in adulthood shaped by who we are and the contexts in which we live? How are development and aging related – and distinct – processes? Students can explore these questions (and many more!) in HDFS 314: Adult Development and Aging (4) this spring. The course will be offered at the OSU Portland Center at Pioneer Square from 2-3:50 pm every Tuesday from April 1-June 2. Learn more about HDFS courses in Portland via Ecampus.

Sociology Course Offering for Summer 2019

Looking for courses to take during the 8-week summer session? Check out SOC 204: Introduction to Sociology! SOC 204 is Bacc. Core Social Processes and Institutions class, this summer during the 8 week session and is also a supporting course for some majors in CPHHS. Four hybrid sections will be available each week on Monday mornings/afternoons and Tuesday afternoons. Students will only need to attend one class session per week. The times for these sections are

Psychology Course Offering for Spring 2019

Psychology of Disability (PSY 499, Section 005, CRN 59722) will be offered in Spring 2019 and is open for students in CPHHS! One out of five people have or will develop a disability in their lifetime, but less often discussed is society’s underlying assumptions regarding this common human experience. This course will explore disability from social psychological and disability studies perspectives. Students will explore social construction of disability and its inter- and intra-personal ramifications. This course departs from traditional psychology courses that focus on impairments within the individual and attempt to normalize people with disabilities. Instead, this class will explore how society’s conception of disability is the main source of handicap. The course will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday from 2-3:50pm.

Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence Showcase

Share your research or other scholarly work, gain presentation experience and add an extra skill to your résumé by participating in this annual showcase. Current undergraduates in all years of study, all academic disciplines and all stages of research or creative work are eligible to present.
This event is sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Education and the Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and the Arts, and will take place on Tuesday, May 14 from 9am to 12pm in the MU Ballroom.

New WGSS Course Offerings in Spring 2019

Two WGSS courses are being offered that in Spring 2019 that may be of interest to students in CPHHS. Both courses fulfill baccalaureate core requirements. WGSS 240: Gender and Sport is a three credit course that fulfills the Social Processes and Institutions Bacc Core requirement. Drawing from cultural, psychosocial, and political perspectives, the course examines intersections of gender with age, sexual orientation, social class, gender identity, race and ethnicity and politics. The course will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-1:20. WGSS 110: Gender, Race and Pop Culture is a three credit course that fulfills the Western Culture Bacc Core requirement. The course introduces students to the critical analysis of mass media and representations of women, gender, sexuality, and race in popular culture. This term, the topics of focus will be British Murder Mysteries and TV Crime Dramas. The course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-11:20. Pre-Therapy and Allied Health Club

The Pre-Therapy and Allied Health (PTAH) Club supports students that are interested in the allied health fields, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, nursing, physician assistant studies and medical school. This club is here to provide students with the opportunity to advance their knowledge in a field of interest, connect with other students, provide volunteer and job opportunities, and raise awareness for individuals with disabilities through fundraising events.
