{"id":1441,"date":"2011-09-27T23:35:32","date_gmt":"2011-09-27T23:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wpmu.library.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-multicultural-archives\/?p=1441"},"modified":"2011-09-27T23:35:32","modified_gmt":"2011-09-27T23:35:32","slug":"basketball-desegregation-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/oregonmulticulturalarchives\/2011\/09\/27\/basketball-desegregation-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Basketball Desegregation Event Now Online!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/oregonmulticulturalarchives\/files\/2011\/09\/event_panelists.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1451  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wpmu.library.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-multicultural-archives\/files\/2011\/09\/event_panelists-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a> Event Panelists: (Left to Right) Paul Valenti, Charlie White, Norm Monroe, Craig Robinson, Larry Griggs Photo: Scobel Wiggins | Corvallis Gazette-Times<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Glory Road<\/em> and the Desegregation of College Basketball: the Untold Story at Oregon State University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last Spring term OSU\u2019s AFAPC (Association of Faculty for the Advancement of People of Color), along with the generous support of Varsity &#8220;O&#8221; and the Office of the Vice Provost of Student Affairs, organized an event to share the untold story of the desegregation of Oregon State\u2019s men\u2019s basketball team and <a href=\"http:\/\/scarc.library.oregonstate.edu\/events\/2011glory\/video-glory.html\" target=\"_blank\">the\u00a0event is now available online<\/a>\u00a0along with the full transcript of the speakers.<\/p>\n<p>What began as AFAPC\u2019s small idea to host a film screening of the 2006 movie <em>Glory Road <\/em>and facilitate a discussion for about 25 people turned into a major event attended by over 150 people from the OSU and Corvallis communities!<\/p>\n<p>Here is some logistical information about the event:<\/p>\n<p>The event included a presentation on\u00a0the history of college basketball desegregation in the United States and the history of the desegregation of OSU\u2019s men\u2019s basketball team by Sociology Professor Dwaine Plaza and Oregon Multicultural Librarian Natalia Fern\u00e1ndez.<\/p>\n<p>The panel discussion was facilitated by Dawn Wright, professor in the department of Geosciences.<\/p>\n<p>Panelists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Norm Monroe,\u00a0first black walk-on player\u00a0during the 1960-1961 season<\/li>\n<li>Charlie White, first black player recruited on scholarship and later assistant to the freshman coach, 1964-1967<\/li>\n<li>Paul Valenti, OSU Basketball Head Coach, 1964-1970<\/li>\n<li>Craig Robinson, OSU Basketball Head Coach, 2009-present<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Larry Griggs, Director of the Educational Opportunities Program, 1985-2008<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brief Outline of Panel Discussion after the presentation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduction of each of the panelists [00:15:58]<\/li>\n<li>Panelists are asked to describe their experiences at OSU, react to the film, etc [00:25:09]<\/li>\n<li>Question and Answer Session [00:55:44]<\/li>\n<li>End of Event [01:23:45]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: The event also included about 25 minutes of clips from the film <em>Glory Road<\/em> aired after the presentation,\u00a0however the\u00a0online version does not include the scenes from the film.<\/p>\n<p>More Coming Soon:<br \/>\nWe had the opportunity to record interviews with both Norm Monroe and Charlie White the day after the event. Those recordings and transcripts will become available later this year.
