One hundred and one years ago, Dr. Booker T. Washington (1856-1915),\u00a0an African-American educator, author, and activist,\u00a0came to speak at Oregon Agricultural College (O.A.C.) on March 19, 1913.<\/p>\n

The appearance of Dr.\u00a0Washington at O.A.C. was the last of a series by the Citizen\u2019s Lyceum Course, run by the Corvallis Lyceum Committee. The Citizen\u2019s Lyceum was open to any Corvallis resident, though it appears that it may have been geared toward students. Although the course\u00a0was primarily for entertainment, lectures were also included in the line-up and were a big draw.<\/p>\n

The Lyceum Club met in the Presbyterian Church and had five scheduled \u201centertainments\u201d for the\u00a01912-1913 academic year:<\/p>\n

October 31 \u2013 Fellow\u2019s Grand Opera Company<\/p>\n

December 4 \u2013 William Sterling Battis (\u201cDickens Interpreter\u201d) in “An Evening with Dickens”<\/p>\n

January 30 \u2013 Neil Litchfield Trio,\u00a0Music and Comedy<\/p>\n

February 4 \u2013 Carmen Italian Orchestra<\/p>\n

February 20 \u2013 Lecture \u201cThe South, It\u2019s Destruction and Reconstruction\u201d by former-Gov. Robert B. Glenn of North Carolina<\/p>\n

The Lyceum had three bonus \u201centertainments\u201d:<\/p>\n

March 19 \u2013 Dr. Booker T. Washington<\/p>\n

For Dr. Washington\u2019s lecture, he spoke on the condition that admittance would be at no cost to students. Due to the popularity of the speaker, the venue switched from the Presbyterian church, home to the other Lyceum events, to the college\u2019s gymnasium. 1500 spectators crowded into the 1300-seat gymnasium to hear him speak.<\/p>\n
