Save Ethnic Studies! New DVD available at the Library

Cover of “Precious Knowledge” DVD

On October 18th dozens of OSU community members gathered to view the documentary “Precious Knowledge: Arizona’s battle over Ethnic Studies” and the filmmaker Eren Isabel McGinnis and special guest Curtis Acosta answered audience questions after the screening.

Don’t know about the film or the controversy in Arizona? Read on…

“Arizona lawmakers believe Tucson High School teachers are teaching victimization, racism, and revolution in their Ethnic Studies classes. Meanwhile Tucson Unified School District’s Mexican American Studies Department have data showing that almost 93% of their students, on average, graduate from high school and 82% attend college.

Why is studying Mexican culture and history controversial? What is Ethnic Studies? Why is the national dropout rate so high for Mexican American youth 50%?

The Dos Vatos Productions team filmed a year in the classroom to find out why the Mexican American Studies program is so popular with students, so misunderstood by the public, and discover what actually happens in the classroom.

PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE illustrates an epic civil rights battle as brave students and teachers battle with lawmakers and public opinion in an effort to keep their classes alive.”

Mexican American Activism in Oregon Panel Discussion

The OSU Press just recently published the book Sonny Montes and Mexican American Activism by U of O History professor Glenn Anthony May

“On one level a biography of Oregon’s leading Mexican American activist, the book also tells the broader story of the state’s Mexican American community during the 1960s and 1970s, a story in which Sonny Montes had an important part.” ~ OSU Press

On Thursday, September 29, OSU hosted a panel discussion featuring Sonny Montes, John Little, and OSU Professor José-Antonio Orosco.

Sonny Montes and John Little worked together for the Valley Migrant League — an organization created to assist Oregon’s migrant workers and later, Montes became involved in the Colegio César Chávez — a four year university by Mexican Americans and for Mexican Americans.

The OMA had the wonderful opportunity to display materials from the Colegio César Chávez Collection

Event Panelists: (Left to Right) Paul Valenti, Charlie White, Norm Monroe, Craig Robinson, Larry Griggs Photo: Scobel Wiggins | Corvallis Gazette-Times

Glory Road and the Desegregation of College Basketball: the Untold Story at Oregon State University

Last Spring term OSU’s AFAPC (Association of Faculty for the Advancement of People of Color), along with the generous support of Varsity “O” and the Office of the Vice Provost of Student Affairs, organized an event to share the untold story of the desegregation of Oregon State’s men’s basketball team and the event is now available online along with the full transcript of the speakers.

What began as AFAPC’s small idea to host a film screening of the 2006 movie Glory Road and facilitate a discussion for about 25 people turned into a major event attended by over 150 people from the OSU and Corvallis communities!

Here is some logistical information about the event:

The event included a presentation on the history of college basketball desegregation in the United States and the history of the desegregation of OSU’s men’s basketball team by Sociology Professor Dwaine Plaza and Oregon Multicultural Librarian Natalia Fernández.

The panel discussion was facilitated by Dawn Wright, professor in the department of Geosciences.

Panelists:

  • Norm Monroe, first black walk-on player during the 1960-1961 season
  • Charlie White, first black player recruited on scholarship and later assistant to the freshman coach, 1964-1967
  • Paul Valenti, OSU Basketball Head Coach, 1964-1970
  • Craig Robinson, OSU Basketball Head Coach, 2009-present
  • Dr. Larry Griggs, Director of the Educational Opportunities Program, 1985-2008

Brief Outline of Panel Discussion after the presentation:

  • Introduction of each of the panelists [00:15:58]
  • Panelists are asked to describe their experiences at OSU, react to the film, etc [00:25:09]
  • Question and Answer Session [00:55:44]
  • End of Event [01:23:45]

Note: The event also included about 25 minutes of clips from the film Glory Road aired after the presentation, however the online version does not include the scenes from the film.

More Coming Soon:
We had the opportunity to record interviews with both Norm Monroe and Charlie White the day after the event. Those recordings and transcripts will become available later this year. And of course, we will be sure to blog about it!

Update regarding the Oral Histories:

Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua & Siuslaw Indians, Coos Bay, OR

For our last site visit of the summer we traveled to Coos Bay to meet with the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua & Siuslaw Indians. While there we met with the cultural director, records manager, archeologist, manager of information systems, tribal administrator, and tribal chairman to discuss the tribe’s cultural archives and records management programs. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to share our project with so many and to learn so much from all of them.

Over the next few months we will begin planning the institute curriculum and are very excited to continue our many conversations will all nine tribes’ archivists, records managers, and other interested tribal members.

Coquille Indian Tribe Site Visit, September 15

Coquille Indian Tribe, North Bend, OR

For our second to last site visit of the summer we had the opportunity to travel to the coast to meet with archives and records managers of the Coquille Indian Tribe. During our meeting we learned about an exciting collaborative project between the records manager and the cultural resources department to custom design a database that will suit their existing and future document managment needs.

After the meeting we decided to take a trip to see the tribe’s beautiful Community Park / Plankhouse – here is the sign before the Plankhouse itself:

Burns Paiute Tribe Visit, August 31

This week had us traveling to Burns, OR to visit with representatives of the Burns Paiute Tribe.  The meeting was a great success bringing together 9 members from different departments throughout the tribe to talk about their records programs and make connections.  Burns may be one of the smaller Oregon Tribes, but they still generate a lot of records.  Together we developed some great ideas for the curriculum for the summer 2012 Archives and Records Management Institute and we look forward to working with them more throughout the next year.
