We will explore three different topics: propagation substrates or growing media, the use of rooting hormone, and the timing of collection and propagation of cuttings taken from local orchards.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Trial 2: Cold Hardiness Evaluation<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-219 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/olives\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_6373-1-e1550181100789-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3206\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_6373-1-e1550181100789-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3206\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_6373-1-e1550181100789-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Temperature sensor installed in olive orchard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This trial will focus on acquisition of a wide variety of olive cultivars from around the world, and evaluating them for their ability to grow successfully in Oregon\u2019s climate. Data will be collected on plant growth, flower number and timing of bloom, and ratings of cold injury.<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"font-size: 17px;letter-spacing: 0.1em;color: #333333;font-family: 'Noto Serif', serif\">Trial 3: Transplanting and Up-Potting Research<\/span><\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_220\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-220\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-220 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/olives\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_6296-e1550181489915-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3206\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_6296-e1550181489915-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3206\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_6296-e1550181489915-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Up-potted olives grow protected from cold in a hoophouse before being transplanted to the field.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;font-family: 'Noto Serif', serif;font-size: 17px\">The up-potting trial will compare the success rates of establishing orchards with plants of different sizes and ages, to explore observations made by growers that more mature trees fare better when first planted.
