Our captain, Marjorie, thought it was “fairly calm” seas in comparison with Marquesas standards, which made us realize how lucky we have been since the beginning of the trip. We gave it a try anyway, and were rewarded with a small group of spotted dolphins to start with, and a large group of melon-headed whales mixed with a few spinner dolphins, very near the exact same spot as yesterday. Unfortunately, heavy rain started soon after we arrived, and we were only able to shoot a few photographs. We decided to go back to the harbor waiting for the bad weather to pass and we gave it another shot in the afternoon although the sea was still rough. By 3pm, we reached the North-East point of the island, but this time we were not able to find the melon-headed whales. A few spinner dolphins were still there, but Beaufort 4 conditions and a large swell made it impossible to attempt biopsy sampling. On the way back, we surveyed the island 3 to 4 km offshore but found no cetaceans (another day without rough-toothed dolphins). However, we ran into a group of about 15 spinner dolphins as we came back along the coast. Again, rough conditions limited our data collection to only a few photographs.

Bad weather finally caught up with us this morning with heavy rain, wind and swell.
