Design and Prototyping
Shampoo first came on the scene September 0100, making its humble appearance as a mixture of animal fats and ashes. That is where shampoo/soap stayed for a long period of time before it was given a makeover by Dean Mahomet in 1794. Mahomet was actually the first individual that brought the word shampoo or shampooing to the Western world. It is derived from the Hindu word “champna”. It is because of Mohamat that the concept of shampooing began to spread in the West. Further down the line in 1903 a gentleman by the name of Hans Shwarzkopf became tired of the chemicals and oils in traditional shampoo so he created what he called a “powder shampoo” or as we know as a dry shampoo. Schwarzkopf then went on to create his own version of liquid shampoo in 1927. This shampoo was so popular that it spurred the creation of the first hair dressing training center, it was called Shwarzkopf Institute of Hair Hygiene. (Efargo 2007) The design of shampoo did not stop there. Shwarzkopf then went on to create a non-alkaline version of shampoo in 1933 to add to his collection of contributions to the world of shampoo. Although there were ways that individuals “washed” their hair before the invention of shampoo it was not designed to for cleansing of the hair but for cleansing in general and it normally left the hair with a dull and unhealthy look to it. Modern day shampoo was not created until the 1930’s and has been improved upon since then to keep our hair healthier and better looking than before. (Efargo 2007)
Manufacturing and Production
Although shampoo was originally created by a man there were men and women who used the product in its raw form. It was tested by both sexes before being manufactured for commercial use. For many years it was used by society and improved upon before commercial sale of the product was ever introduced or even thought of. (Random History 2008.) Shampoo is manufactured in various places around the world. There are a variety of individuals that work in the shampoo manufacturing industry, including both men and women. Shampoo is a mixture of chemicals and oils that clean the hair while maintaining the health of the hair and the scalp. This will include things such as preservatives, additives, and conditioning agents. (Advameg 2015)
Marketing and Sales
Shampoo is primarily marketed towards women. The majority of commercials that you see on television for shampoo feature women with long hair. Although there are some companies out there that are beginning to market exclusively to men and other manufacturers who are adding product lines that are aimed towards men alone. The products have a more “masculine” sent to them and are marketed as more manly. As stated in the article The Global Shampoo Market 2014-2019 Trends, Forecast, and Opportunity Analysis “The global shampoo market is expected to reach an estimated value of $25.73 billion by 2019. The major drivers of the shampoo market is product innovation, emerging men’s grooming sector, increasing pollution, increasing concern of consumers about their appearance, and increasing demand for natural and organic hair shampoos.” That is one of the main reasons that the herbal shampoo market is projected to have massive growth as people look to making a better environment for them and others to live in. Shampoo is sold all over the world in a variety of different stores ranging from beauty salons to grocery stores to corner markets. Shampoo is sold in bottles ranging in size from industrial all the way down to travel. If there is a specific kind of shampoo that is preferred and you cannot find it in the store then it is almost a guarantee that you will be able to find it online. (Reportbuyer.com 2014)
User Support
There are so many different kinds of shampoo out there. Although there are instructions on the bottle how to use the shampoo if there are any other questions there are also websites that are attached to the company that manufactures your chosen shampoo. For example if you choose to use Viviscal hair care products that are made for both men and women you can look up their customer support phone number, website, or email. (Vivisacal 2015)
Maintenance
There is no maintenance required for shampoo. However shampoo can expire so caution should be used when lathering up. It is said that expired shampoo will smell off and feel different when you are putting it in your hair. It can also cause damage to your luscious locks and scalp if used when expired. The best way to know if your chosen shampoo product is expired is to check for an expiration date on the bottle. If you cant find that then a good rule of thumb is to toss it after 3 years. (Craven 2013)
Recycling and Disposal
Shampoo bottles are mainly made of plastic so they can be recycled to make new bottles or other plastic products. That being said, the shampoo industry is not exempt from the movement to make our world cleaner and healthier. There are many shampoo manufacturers that are making their bottles from recycled plastic as well as offering them in more recyclable and cleaner packaging. (Reportbuyer.com 2014)
