Dr. Dan Hartung concluded a study showing the over-prescribing of antipsychotic medications for off-label use. His study was prompted by Medicaid when, in 10 years, the price of antipsychotic drug payout more than quadrupled. Drugs such as Quetiapine (Seroquel) were being promoted and prescribed for uses approved by the FDA, including dementia, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, attention deficit, and insomnia. The problem has begun to decline as the FDA stepped in to reduce the off-label prescribing, but it is not uncommon for many antipsychotic drugs to continue to be prescribed for inappropriate uses.
