{"id":451,"date":"2014-01-28T17:01:49","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T17:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/liberalarts\/?p=451"},"modified":"2014-01-28T17:02:36","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T17:02:36","slug":"overcoming-winter-term-duldrums","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/liberalarts\/2014\/01\/28\/overcoming-winter-term-duldrums\/","title":{"rendered":"Overcoming the Winter Term Doldrums"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/liberalarts\/files\/2014\/01\/Kate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-452\" alt=\"Kate\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/liberalarts\/files\/2014\/01\/Kate-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>By Kate Virden<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to 2014!\u00a0 You\u2019ve survived fall term, had a relaxing winter break, and are now working the daily grind.\u00a0 Winter term is unlike any other at OSU.\u00a0 It\u2019s not as exciting as fall when everyone is back to school and football season is in full swing with school spirit events happening every week.\u00a0 Spring term is when the sun finally pokes its head out from the clouds and students can be found lying on the grass in the MU and library quads.\u00a0\u00a0 Now we\u2019re left with winter term.\u00a0 It\u2019s usually a bit of a shock to come back from break and immediately be swamped with homework, so realistically, it can get pretty depressing since the sun is never seen; it\u2019s bone chillingly cold, and often very, very rainy.\u00a0 The best ways to avoid feelings of seasonal depression that are very common throughout Oregon is to do the things you love!<\/p>\n<p>Exercising is a great way to relieve stress and also release endorphins or feelings of happiness.\u00a0 I\u2019ve found running for even 30 minutes every day forces me to set aside time for myself and be active.\u00a0 Even walking a little bit slower to your next class and taking time to breathe in the fresh Oregon air can make your step lighter.\u00a0 Luckily for us, one of our school colors is bright orange so represent Beaver Pride and wear an orange hoodie one day to spruce up the neutrals that dominate wintertime wardrobes.\u00a0\u00a0 Socializing with friends at one of the coffee shops on campus or in the MU Lounge is a great way to take your mind off of never ending to-do lists and laughter really is the best medicine.\u00a0 Drink non-caffeinated tea before bed to relax or buy some vitamin D supplements if you aren\u2019t getting enough fish, eggs or dairy in your diet.\u00a0 If seasonal depression really affects you, a Sun Box Light from Amazon.com might be something to interest you.\u00a0 These boxes use light therapy to filter UV rays and fit on a desktop so it\u2019s like having the sun right on your desk!\u00a0You can also stop in to the mind spa or the library to use a UV light for free to help boost your vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what you choose to do to devote some time to yourself this winter term, it\u2019s important that you set a schedule and stick to it.
