{"id":9141,"date":"2018-04-17T09:57:52","date_gmt":"2018-04-17T16:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/?p=9141"},"modified":"2018-12-10T11:43:48","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T19:43:48","slug":"new-research-shows-repeat-spawning-aids-fitness-survival-steelhead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/2018\/04\/new-research-shows-repeat-spawning-aids-fitness-survival-steelhead\/","title":{"rendered":"Steelhead&#8217;s repeat spawning aids fitness and survival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For steelhead trout, reproductive choices represent a collection of tradeoffs \u2013 whether spawning once or doing it multiple times, no decision comes without risks and benefits.<\/p>\n<p>New research by <a href=\"http:\/\/people.oregonstate.edu\/~blouinm\/\">Michael Blouin<\/a>, professor of integrative biology, and researchers at Purdue University\u00a0shows steelhead that spawn repeatedly have greater than double the lifetime reproductive success of fish that spawn a single time, the benefit for making the daunting journey to sea more than once.<\/p>\n<p>Findings, which could lead to more effective conservation efforts, were published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Like salmon, steelhead \u2013 Oncorhynchus mykiss \u2013 are anadromous, meaning they travel to the ocean as smolts and return to their natal streams to spawn;
