Enrique Thomann, the Interim Head of the Mathematics Department<\/p><\/div>\n

The College of Science is pleased to announce that Dr. Enrique Thomann has accepted the position of interim head of the Department of Mathematics. He assumes the role from Thomas Dick who stepped down as chair last month.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of Mathematics is continuing an open search for a permanent department head.<\/p>\n

Thomann brings substantial experience as a researcher and educator to his new role as interim department head. In this capacity, he will manage the department\u2019s academic and research programs, and will oversee a unit with about 80 faculty\/staff and 70 graduate assistants. \u00a0He will continue to conduct research and teach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am confident that Dr. Thomann will support the department as it strives for excellence in teaching, research and service,\u201d said College of Science Dean Sastry Pantula.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is committed to enhancing diversity and student success. \u00a0He will work to foster good relationships within the department, in the College and across the university.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thomann joined the Mathematics faculty at Oregon State in 1987. \u00a0He supervised and continues to supervise undergraduate, master\u2019s and doctoral student theses. \u00a0He served as an associate editor for the Annals of Applied Probability from 2005 to 2012, and returns from a year at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in Minneapolis, where he held a New Directions Research Professorship.<\/p>\n

Thomann specializes in partial differential equations, analysis, applied probability and mathematical modeling. His current research explores problems in partial differential equations arising from fluid mechanics. Thomann also collaborates with colleagues across departments and disciplines to develop mathematical models to problems in ecology, oceanography, hydrology and the management of natural resources.<\/p>\n

After completing his undergraduate education in mathematics in his native Argentina at the Universidad Nacional de C\u00f3rdoba, Thomann earned his PhD in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
