{"id":7865,"date":"2017-08-15T11:00:59","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T18:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/?p=7865"},"modified":"2017-12-07T12:29:07","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T20:29:07","slug":"size-matters-temperature-habitat-scavengers-carcasses-eat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/2017\/08\/size-matters-temperature-habitat-scavengers-carcasses-eat\/","title":{"rendered":"Size matters, and so do temperature and habitat, to scavengers and the carcasses they eat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research has shed fresh light on the largely understudied area of vertebrate scavenging ecology, particularly how biotic factors \u2013 living organisms \u2013 and abiotic ones such as heat or cold influence communities of scavengers.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are important because carrion, the decaying flesh of dead animals, is a key nutrient for vertebrates worldwide and comparatively little is known about how all of the interplay works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA common perception is most things are depredated and eaten quickly, but in actuality, carrion is a highly available resource that\u2019s contributing significantly to the food web,\u201d said Erin Abernethy, a Ph.D. student in integrative biology and second author on the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of research on how much carrion invertebrates eat, and they do eat a lot, and how the size of a carcass can tell you how much goes to vertebrates or invertebrates,\u201d Abernethy said. \u201cBut there hasn\u2019t been much on who among the vertebrate scavengers \u2013 coyotes, vultures, hogs, foxes, etc. \u2013 is getting what and how much, and how carcass size and habitat affect all of that.
