{"id":3365,"date":"2016-03-17T13:58:32","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T20:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/?p=3365"},"modified":"2016-03-18T09:41:02","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T16:41:02","slug":"lubchenco-receives-linus-pauling-legacy-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/2016\/03\/lubchenco-receives-linus-pauling-legacy-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Lubchenco receives Linus Pauling Legacy Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Integrative biology professor and internationally recognized marine ecologist <a href=\"http:\/\/gordon.science.oregonstate.edu\/lubchenco\/\">Jane Lubchenco<\/a> has received the 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/paulingblog.wordpress.com\/tag\/linus-pauling-legacy-award\/\">Linus Pauling Legacy Award<\/a> sponsored by the Oregon State University Libraries and Press. She is also an OSU Distinguished University Professor and Adviser in Marine Studies, a position charged with coordinating and expanding OSU&#8217;s international prominence in marine-related studies.<\/p>\n<p>The Pauling Award recognizes outstanding achievement in a subject of interest to the famous scientist and two-time Nobel laureate. Lubchenco is the ninth winner of the prestigious award; several of the previous recipients were Nobel Prize winners.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the award celebration, Lubchenco will deliver a free public lecture in Portland on Tuesday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Oregon Historical Society, 1200 S.W. Park Ave. She will deliver a presentation entitled \u201cScientists Making Waves and Bringing Hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lubchenco is also currently serving as the first U.S. Science Envoy for the Ocean and is an international expert on marine ecology, environmental science and climate change. She is a pioneer in the development of marine protected areas and reserves, and in fisheries reform, which are complementary efforts to return fisheries to sustainability and profitability while protecting habitats and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Lubchenco was formerly administrator of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere. As one of the most highly cited ecologists in the world, she has received numerous honors including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macfound.org\/fellows-faq\/\">MacArthur \u201cgenius\u201d award<\/a> and
