The College of Science welcomes\u00a0Enrique Thomann<\/a>\u00a0as the Head of the Department of Mathematics effective immediately. Thomann has served as interim head of the department of Mathematics since October of last year.<\/p>\n

With extensive research and teaching experience, Thomann will\u00a0lead the department\u2019s academic and research programs, and will\u00a0oversee about 80 faculty\/staff and 70 graduate assistants.\u00a0He will continue with his research and teaching.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am delighted that Dr. Thomann has agreed to be Head of the Department of Mathematics,\u201d said College of Science Dean Sastry Pantula.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is an outstanding mathematician with a pleasant personality, and we are extremely fortunate to have him in this leadership position. His deep commitment to enhancing diversity and student success will be a tremendous asset to the department, to Science and to OSU.\u201d \u2014Dean Sastry Pantula<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thomann joined the Mathematics faculty at Oregon State in 1987 supervising undergraduate, master\u2019s and\u00a0doctoral student theses, which he continues to do.\u00a0 He served as an associate editor for the\u00a0Annals of Applied Probability<\/em> from 2005 to 2012, and recently spent a\u00a0year at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in\u00a0Minneapolis, where he held a New Directions Research Professorship.<\/p>\n

\u201cMathematics holds a special place at Oregon State. We have deep expertise in basic mathematical research as well as interdisciplinary research that cuts across other sciences and engineering,\u201d said Thomann.<\/p>\n

“Our faculty is recognized nationally and internationally for their teaching and research excellence. We will continue to explore innovative methods for delivering mathematical curricula to support student success. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in mathematics to raise the visibility and impact of mathematics on our campus as well as globally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomann specializes in partial differential equations, analysis,\u00a0applied probability and mathematical modeling. His current research\u00a0explores problems in partial differential equations arising from fluid\u00a0mechanics. Thomann also collaborates with colleagues across\u00a0departments and disciplines to develop mathematical models for applications in ecology, oceanography, hydrology and the management of natural\u00a0resources.<\/p>\n

After completing his undergraduate education in mathematics in his native Argentina at the Universidad\u00a0Nacional de\u00a0C\u00f3rdoba, Thomann earned his Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
