{"id":1849,"date":"2015-07-07T13:58:52","date_gmt":"2015-07-07T20:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/?p=1849"},"modified":"2015-09-02T12:09:27","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T19:09:27","slug":"bartholomew-named-pernot-distinguished-professor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/2015\/07\/bartholomew-named-pernot-distinguished-professor\/","title":{"rendered":"Bartholomew named Pernot Distinguished Professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The College of Science is proud to announce that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/microbiology.science.oregonstate.edu\/content\/dr-jerri-bartholomew\">Jerri Bartholomew<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0appointed the\u00a0Emile F.\u00a0Pernot\u00a0Distinguished Professor\u00a0in\u00a0the Department of Microbiology.\u00a0She currently serves as Head of the Department of Microbiology\u00a0in the Colleges of Science\u00a0and Agricultural Sciences\u00a0and as director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/microbiology.science.oregonstate.edu\/content\/john-l-fryer-salmon-disease-laboratory\">J.L. Fryer Salmon Disease Laboratory<\/a>, one of the only\u00a0of its kind in the world dedicated to the study of organisms infectious for\u00a0salmonids\u00a0and other freshwater fish.<\/p>\n<p>The Emile F.\u00a0Pernot\u00a0Distinguished Professorship in Microbiology was established with an estate gift of the late Mabel\u00a0Pernot, the daughter of Emile\u00a0Pernot\u00a0who established the Microbiology Department at Oregon State more than a century ago. The award recognizes a\u00a0professor\u00a0in the\u00a0Department\u00a0of Microbiology who is a\u00a0distinguished contributor\u00a0to the field of microbiology science and who\u00a0has a record of contributions to\u00a0OSU\u2019s\u00a0education and research missions.<\/p>\n<p>Bartholomew\u2019s research\u00a0focuses on the pathogens affecting the health of wild Pacific salmon populations, the effects of climate change on fish disease, parasite evolution and invasion as well as the evolution of the immune systems of fish. Her research program has attracted more than $12 million in grants and contracts, which has resulted in 84 peer-reviewed publications, 15 book chapters and an edited book.\u00a0Funding for her research\u00a0comes from various agencies, including the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health and Oregon Sea Grant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I am proud of Dr. Bartholomew for receiving this tremendous recognition,\u201d said\u00a0Sastry\u00a0G.\u00a0Pantula, dean of the College of Science. \u00a0\u201cProfessorships such as the\u00a0Pernot\u00a0Professorship allow us to honor and reward our best faculty members like Dr. Bartholomew. The strength of our College\u00a0and of science\u00a0rests on the strength of our faculty.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With joint appointments in the College of Science and the College of Agricultural Sciences,\u00a0Bartholomew has served on the Department of Microbiology faculty for 23 years.\u00a0She has mentored six post-doctoral scholars as well as six Ph.D. and 15\u00a0master\u2019s\u00a0and 17 undergraduate research projects. Bartholomew also teaches Advances in Disease Ecology,\u00a0Fish Diseases in Conservation Biology and Aquaculture,\u00a0and offers a semi-annual\u00a0Salmonid\u00a0Disease Workshop\u00a0for state and federal fishery biologists.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrating her outstanding leadership, Bartholomew helped organize the 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0International Symposium on Aquatic Animal Health in Portland last year that attracted 300 fish health professionals from 26 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Bartholomew is an OSU alumna, earning both her master\u2019s degree and Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from the university.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Microbiology Head Jerri Bartholomew has been appointed the Emile.
