Family Weekend events featuring Nike, Harvard Pigments Museum and others

The College of Science welcomed all students and their families for special events as part of Spring Family Weekend May 5-6, 2017. This year we teamed up with the Honors College to co-host the following events for all science and Honors College students.

We hosted a unique and arts and science event, “The Colorful World of Pigments” celebrating the blue pigment, YInMN Blue, that was discovered by Chemistry Professor Mas Subramanian in 2009, the first in nearly 200 years. The discovery has gone viral this past year with millions of viewers around the world.

The event kicked off with an interactive art event for children and adults. Local and student artists will exhibit their work, many of which feature YInMn blue pigments. The main event was an invigorating panel discussion featuring guest speakers from Nike, The Shepherd Color Company, Harvard University’s Pigments Museum and special guest, Crayola, who made a surprise announcement of national import:  YInMn Blue will be the inspiration for a new blue crayon color!

The College of Science and Honors College also jointly hosted a student talent show and a light brunch for families on Saturday, May 6. More than two dozen students participated in the art show featured their paintings, sculpture, and mixed media items and a student talent show with acts from folk singing to Bollywood dancing to stand up improv. The talent was outstanding!

We look forward to welcoming families to campus again next year!
