Congratulations to the following young statistics researchers on their outstanding achievements! The IISA Young Researcher Awards recognize young researchers who have contributed significantly to statistical methodology to solve real world problems. Awards are made to researchers who are 45 years old or younger and who are active members of IISA.
Theoretical Statistics and Probability
Antar Bandyopadhyay, Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi, India
Antar Bandyopadhyay is an associate professor in the theoretical statistics and mathematics unit at Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi. His main research interest is in theoretical and applied probability primarily focusing on discrete problems arising out of combinatorics, statistical physics and computer science. He also avidly pursues research in many areas of theoretical statistics and related probability questions. Bandyopadhyay obtained his bachelor and master’s degrees in statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, India and holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Saonli Basu, University of Minnesota
Saonli Basu is an associate professor of biostatistics in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. Her research is focused on developing statistical methodologies for genetic mapping of complex traits. She has been awarded NIH grants for applying statistical methods to a variety of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Basu earned a bachelor’s degree from Presidency College, Kolkata, a master’s degree from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Washington.
Swati Biswas, The University of Texas at Dallas
Swati Biswas is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. Her research interests include biostatistics, statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, cancer genetics, risk prediction models and Bayesian clinical trials. She has been awarded numerous grants for statistical risk prediction studies for breast cancer susceptibility. Biswas received her bachelor and master’s degrees at the University of Delhi, India, and her Ph.D. in biostatistics from The Ohio State University.
