{"id":1344,"date":"2019-02-20T13:57:06","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T21:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/hybridflc\/?p=1344"},"modified":"2019-02-20T13:57:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T21:57:06","slug":"integrating-online-and-in-class-workshops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/hybridflc\/2019\/02\/20\/integrating-online-and-in-class-workshops\/","title":{"rendered":"Integrating online and in-class workshops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Online Course Design Pitfall #5: Ignore the ways students learn from each other.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WR 324 is already heavily collaborative: \u00a0students read each other\u2019s first drafts and write peer reviews, which are keyed to specific learning outcomes for each writing assignment. \u00a0They meet in small group workshops to discuss their evolving stories (again, I give them specific questions and guidelines that connect to the learning outcomes and assessment guidelines for that assignment).\u00a0 I \u00a0put them in pairs and groups for a variety of other tasks and activities, too. \u00a0So avoiding this pitfall is something that\u2019s already built into the nature of this course.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2026 a challenge in \u201chybridizing\u201d 324 will be to figure out \u201cwhat goes where,\u201d as Cub\u2019s mini-lesson on \u201cSuccessful Hybrid Design\u201d points out.\u00a0 \u201cIf it works as well online as in class, consider putting it online so you can reserve limited class time for what works better face to face.\u201d\u00a0 Never having taught online, I\u2019m wrestling with this question.\u00a0 What <em>will<\/em> work as well online?\u00a0 How to divide up the usual group activities between classroom and online (while also developing new approaches that will make the best use of the online format)?\u00a0 And how to best integrate and connect face-to-face and online learning?<\/p>\n<p>In thinking about the workshop process, I have a couple of ideas.\u00a0 Online workshopping would work great for the first assignment, which comes early in the term, week 2, before students really feel comfortable with each other.\u00a0 For the second assignment, I could break the workshop process into two parts: \u00a0they respond to each other\u2019s drafts online, and when they meet in class, each writer brings in a plan for revision based on the group&#8217;s feedback (and mine).\u00a0 These would be debriefings, not additional workshops.<\/p>\n<p>This is something we never have time for:\u00a0 students usually do the workshop, go off and revise their stories, and then turn the final draft in to me.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t get the chance to discuss how the workshop comments aid in their revision process.\u00a0 (There could even be an online follow-up, where they have the option to read each other\u2019s final drafts\u2014though I want to be careful not to add more work\/create a course and a half!)<\/p>\n<p>For the third assignment, maybe I&#8217;d move the workshop into the classroom space?<\/p>\n<p>For non-workshop activities, I like this point from Elizabeth St. Germain\u2019s \u201cFive Common Pitfalls\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cInclude assignments that require students to share ideas and resources and present topics to each other.\u201d\u00a0 Assigning pairs or groups of students (online) to cover particular points in a textbook chapter, or questions on an assigned short story, would be a great way to prepare them for class, so we could jump right into discussion.\u00a0 I\u2019ll want to be sure that these assignments aren\u2019t too laborious or time consuming.\u00a0 The idea would be that once they&#8217;ve done the reading, they should be able to respond to their group members with their particular topic or idea in ten minutes or so&#8211;the same amount of time we&#8217;d spend in class on this task.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Online Course Design Pitfall #5: Ignore the ways students learn from each other.\u00a0 WR 324 is already heavily collaborative: \u00a0students read each other\u2019s first drafts and write peer reviews, which are keyed to specific learning outcomes for each writing assignment. &hellip;
