{"id":1270,"date":"2018-04-24T05:42:11","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T12:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/hybridflc\/?p=1270"},"modified":"2018-04-24T08:26:49","modified_gmt":"2018-04-24T15:26:49","slug":"will-avoid-sage-stage-online-course-design-pitfall-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/hybridflc\/2018\/04\/24\/will-avoid-sage-stage-online-course-design-pitfall-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Open-ended Discussion Boards to enable student-led discovery\/content"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For my course I will have 2 open-ended discussion boards that students can post new information that they have come across from other sources outside the class.\u00a0 This will allow students to contribute to the direction of the course discsussion while earning optional extra credit points toward their grade in the process.\u00a0 The first of these will be to post relevant news articles on climate change.\u00a0 The second will be to post relevant blogs, youtube videos, or websites that question whether:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">the climate is warming,<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">humans are responsible,<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">warming will have an impact, or<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">it is feasible to try to make a change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Below is the post for the News discussion Board.\u00a0 I would love it if folks have suggestions or thoughts on how to improve upon it.\u00a0 Thanks in advance!\u00a0 Jillian<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Example Discussion Board Post:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WOW &#8211; Global Climate Change is all over the News!\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0And just in time while you are taking this course on Introduction to Climate Change. \u00a0To help keep everyone\u00a0abreast of all that is happening, post Global Climate Change News articles or links of interest on this new Discussion Board.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong>Maximum extra credit on this Discussion Board will be 40 points.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>All points\u00a0will be added after the Discussion Board closes at the end of week 9.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Rubric:<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>5 points:<\/strong>\u00a0Posted a link to an article, blog, seminar, etc.\u00a0together with an overview of the content and a statement describing what aspect of this course&#8217; lectures\/labs\/reading it addresses.
