{"id":11,"date":"2014-02-11T18:39:33","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T18:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/honorslink\/?p=11"},"modified":"2016-01-25T23:33:42","modified_gmt":"2016-01-25T23:33:42","slug":"faculty-student-mixer-encourages-undergraduate-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/honorslink\/2014\/02\/11\/faculty-student-mixer-encourages-undergraduate-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Student Mixer Encourages Undergraduate Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>A group of high-achieving students eager to further their studies got a unique glimpse into cutting-edge research happening within the <a title=\"College of Public Health and Human Sciences\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/\">College of Public Health and Human Sciences<\/a> (PHHS) at a student\/faculty mixer hosted by the <a title=\"University Honors College\" href=\"http:\/\/honors.oregonstate.edu\/\">Honors College<\/a> (HC) in late January.<\/p>\n<p>The event allowed UHC students to learn about current PHHS research and meet potential thesis mentors, and PHHS\u00a0 to meet high-achieving students interested in research opportunities in their fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a strong initiative on campus to make sure our undergraduate students are more engaged in enriching activities, and research is one of those things,\u201d says PHHS Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs <a title=\"Mark Hoffman | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/hoffman-mark\">Mark Hoffman<\/a>. \u201cUndergraduates who participate in research not only receive great academic experience, but also a direct connection to a faculty member whom they can turn to for support and advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 10 students heard from seven PHHS faculty \u2013 <a title=\"Viktor Bovbjerg | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/bovbjerg-viktor\">Viktor Bovbjerg<\/a>, <a title=\"Bridget Hatfield | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/hatfield-bridget\">Bridget Hatfield<\/a>, <a title=\"Sam Johnson | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/johnson-sam\">Sam Johnson<\/a>, <a title=\"Marc Norcross | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/norcross-marc\">Marc Norcross<\/a>, <a title=\"Mike Pavol | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/pavol-mike\">Mike Pavol<\/a>, <a title=\"Robert Stawski | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/stawski-robert\">Rob Stawski<\/a> and <a title=\"JK Yun | Faculty Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/people\/yun-joonkoo-jk\">JK Yun<\/a> \u2013 about research opportunities ranging from analyzing data to coming up with their own research project in fields of <a title=\"Athletic Training\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/degrees\/athletic-training\">athletic training<\/a>, <a title=\"Exercise and Sport Science\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/degrees\/exercise-sport-science\">exercise and sport science<\/a>, <a title=\"Human Development and Family Sciences\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/degrees\/human-development-and-family-sciences\">human development and family sciences<\/a>, <a title=\"Nutrition\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/degrees\/nutrition\">nutrition<\/a>, and <a title=\"Public Health\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/degrees\/public-health\">public health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned that there are many different venues for research even within one college,\u201d says undeclared freshman Allison Daley. \u201cThis event served as a brief introduction to the world of research at OSU for me. Even though I am not ready to necessarily make a commitment to a research project yet, I want to start seeing what possibilities are out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exercise and Sport Science Associate Professor Mike Pavol, who presented on his research aimed at preventing falls and fractures in older adults, says the best part of working with undergraduate students is their enthusiasm toward research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students I\u2019ve worked with have been excited to be involved in research, were eager to learn and contribute, and have done a great job,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve really enjoyed working with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although this event was exclusive to HC students, the PHHS\u2019 <a title=\"URAP\" href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/urap\">Undergraduate Research Awards Program<\/a> is open to all students within PHHS \u2013 and offers the opportunity to delve into hands-on experiences, gain exposure to possible new careers, and increase competitiveness for graduate school admission by participating in research.<\/p>\n<p>Story by Heather Turner, originally published in <a href=\"http:\/\/health.oregonstate.edu\/synergies\/\">Synergies.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of high-achieving students eager to further their studies got a unique glimpse into cutting-edge research happening within the College of Public Health and Human Sciences (PHHS) at a student\/faculty mixer hosted by the Honors College (HC) in late January.
