Alden Moss – Student Spotlight

Alden MossHC bioengineering student Alden Moss enriches his class schedule with clubs and research projects that give him a well-rounded experience and keep his schedule busy.

In addition to being an officer of the CBEE student club as well as the president of OSU’s Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) student chapter, he has worked with Dr. Adam Higgins in the bioengineering department as a Johnson Intern for two summers. During the first summer, he studied cryopreservation of granulocytes (white blood cells) and the work he completed was published in the Cryobiology Journal. The next summer, he worked on a device to treat sepsis by filtering blood.

Because of these research experiences, Alden received honorable mention for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a national scholarship for students interested in pursuing a research career. He has also been awarded an Honors Experience Scholarship for presenting his research at the BMES Annual Meeting in Tampa, Florida and studying abroad in Ecuador.

Currently, Alden is participating in a research-based internship with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) in Bethesda, Maryland for the summer. His project is on designing a point-of-care HIV diagnostic device that could potentially be used in the developing world.

After OSU, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering, and is most interested in tissue engineering, microfluidics, and diagnostic devices/assay design.
