Henri Jansen and Janet Lee Named Honors College Eminent Professors

The Honors College (HC) at Oregon State University has named Henri Jansen and Janet Lee HC Eminent Professors for 2014. HC Eminent Professor awards recognize faculty who have made outstanding contributions to the education and mentorship of the high-achieving students in the Honors College.

“Dr. Lee and Dr. Jansen are committed to the kind of engaged, student-centered teaching that is the foundation of the Honors College experience and our students’ success,” says HC Associate Dean Tara Williams.

Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Janet Lee has been one of the HC’s most valued and active faculty partners for over a decade. Dr. Lee came to OSU in 1991 and directed the program in Women Studies from her arrival until 2002. Upon returning to teaching and research full time, Dr. Lee became a regular contributor to the HC curriculum, offering courses entitled Global Women, Men and Masculinities, and Women: Self and Society. She has also twice served as the primary mentor to an Honors College undergraduate thesis, and her engagement with and commitment to the HC has been instrumental in building a strong collaborative relationship between the college and the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Dr. Lee’s excellence as a teacher and campus leader has been widely recognized, most recently when she received both the Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award and C. Warren Hovland Service Award in 2011. In recognition of her record of service, teaching, and mentorship, a panel of peers selected Janet Lee as a HC Eminent Professor for 2014.

Professor Henri Jansen of the Department of Physics has been a dedicated partner of the Honors College for nearly fifteen years. The chair of the physics department since 1998, Dr. Jansen has also taught a HC version of introductory physics thirteen times. This engagement is emblematic of his commitment to lower division science education and the HC ideal of giving Honors College students opportunities to work with the university’s leading senior faculty members from the outset of their time at Oregon State. Dr. Jansen’s involvement with HC students has carried throughout their careers, and he has served as the primary mentor on three HC undergraduate theses. In addition, Dr. Jansen’s leadership in the Department of Physics helped to establish honors physics in the HC curriculum, a foundational component of many HC students’ experience in the college. A faculty panel selected Dr. Jansen as the 2014 Sandy and Elva Sanders Eminent Professor in the Honors College to honor his longstanding contributions to the HC and his dedicated support to high-achieving students at Oregon State University.

The HC Eminent Professor awards are made possible through the generosity of Honors College donors, particularly Ruth Beyer and Joseph (Sandy) and Cheryl Sanders.
