Day of Service

In an ongoing effort to foster a spirit of volunteerism in our college, GSC encourages everyone to participate in the CEOAS Day of Service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Three local organizations are prepared to host CEOAS volunteers on Monday, January 20th, 2014, from 9am-noon.

MLK Day of Service 2014

1. Safe Haven Humane Society

SHHS is looking for volunteers to help with cleaning, which involves sweeping, washing windows, mopping, cleaning kennels, scooping yards, doing dishes, doing laundry, and/or dusting. After cleaning, you can socialize with some of the animals.

SHHS’s mission is to find permanent, loving homes for all animals entrusted in their care. Learn more about their mission, our team and the services we provide by following the links below.

2. Starker Arts Garden for Education

SAGE, Starker Arts Garden for Education, is a one-acre production and education garden.  Each year 3 – 4 TONS of food is grown and donated to local hunger relief agencies.  This could not happen without the help of hundreds of community volunteers who help with all steps of the growing process; soil maintenance, garden prep, planting, tending and harvesting.  Possible tasks to be completed in January include mulching, basic weeding, pruning and possibly harvesting fresh produce for a local hunger relief agency!

3. Children’s Farm Home

The Children’s Farm Home offers assistance and stabilization for children and families dealing with an acute mental illness diagnosis, with residential treatment for 60+ children ages 5-18.

Friends and family are welcome to join in. Hopefully we can surpass the record-breaking number of volunteers we had last year!

Sign up sheets are located in the CEOAS Admin lobby, outside of 104 Wilkinson Hall, and on the GSC bulletin board near Burt193.
