{"id":75,"date":"2013-04-10T17:52:18","date_gmt":"2013-04-10T17:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/?p=75"},"modified":"2013-04-10T17:52:18","modified_gmt":"2013-04-10T17:52:18","slug":"spatial-statistics-introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/2013\/04\/10\/spatial-statistics-introduction\/","title":{"rendered":"Spatial Statistics Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a general introduction to what I can expect from spatial statistics I searched for a webpage that would define what spatial statistics are, what kinds of questions they can answer, and how they are different from a-spatial statistics.\u00a0 I found a document entitled \u201cUnderstanding Spatial Statistics in ArcGIS 9\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/lrsg\/Teaching\/EES6513\/ESRI_ws_SpatialStatsSlides.pdf\">http:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/lrsg\/Teaching\/EES6513\/ESRI_ws_SpatialStatsSlides.pdf<\/a>) that answers these questions.<\/p>\n<p>The document begins by answering the question \u201cWhat are spatial statistics?\u201d\u00a0 The author defines them as \u201cexploratory tools that help you measure spatial processes, spatial distributions, and spatial relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are two categories of spatial measurements:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Identifying characteristics of a distribution.\u00a0 This first category of measurements is descriptive, answers questions like: where is the center, or how are the features distributed around the center?<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quantifying geographic pattern ie are the data random, clustered, or evenly dispersed.<\/p>\n<p>Spatial statistics are different from a-spatial or non-spatial statistics in that spatial statistics include some measure of space in there mathematics.\u00a0 In most cases, neighboring observations are considered in the statistics regarding a focal observation or global measurement.<\/p>\n<p>The document describes a few examples of problems or questions addressed using spatial statistics available in ArcGIS:<\/p>\n<p>1) How does the distribution of Dengue Fever for a village in India change during the first three weeks after the outbreak?<\/p>\n<p>2) Does bobcat movement between preferred habitat areas coincide with natural land features such as valleys, rivers, or ridgelines?<\/p>\n<p>3) Are there persistent areas in the United States where people are either dying earlier, or living longer, than the average American?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a general introduction to what I can expect from spatial statistics I searched for a webpage that would define what spatial statistics are, what kinds of questions they can answer, and how they are different from a-spatial statistics.\u00a0 I found a document entitled \u201cUnderstanding Spatial Statistics in ArcGIS 9\u201d (http:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/lrsg\/Teaching\/EES6513\/ESRI_ws_SpatialStatsSlides.pdf) that answers these questions.&hellip;
