{"id":523,"date":"2013-06-10T15:29:48","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T22:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/?p=523"},"modified":"2013-06-18T08:59:10","modified_gmt":"2013-06-18T15:59:10","slug":"defining-my-research-focus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/2013\/06\/10\/defining-my-research-focus\/","title":{"rendered":"Defining my research focus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last couple of weeks I have been working to better define my research focus:<\/p>\n<p>A geographical approach to understand how the local spatial structure of urban green space shapes the way in which communities evolve.\u00a0 I hope to inform the Environmental Justice, Resilience Theory, and Adaptation literature as well. ( I anticipate adding to this and\/or changing it entirely).<\/p>\n<p>Below is a diagram of the Land Use and Society Model, which represents the dynamic feedback process where by a particular land use activity in the human\/cultural circle may be modified by a new set of resource management\u00a0 signals issued from the legal\/ political circle in response to new awareness of the impacts of existing practices on the physical world.\u00a0 I will\u00a0 use a version of the Land Use and Society Model to help sort out my thoughts and ideas about my research.\u00a0 For example, the process of urbanization, the removal of native vegetation and implementation of\u00a0 impervious surfaces has created environmental impacts on the micro climate within urban areas (ie: heat island effect) let&#8217;s say that to mitigate this impact the state and local sectors enforce the implementation or modification of recreation areas\/parks.\u00a0 It is the enforcement of certain resource management regulations and how they effect the social and economic components of this model that interest me most.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/files\/2013\/06\/Landuse_society_model.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-529 aligncenter\" alt=\"Landuse_society_model\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/files\/2013\/06\/Landuse_society_model-300x294.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1572\/files\/2013\/06\/Landuse_society_model-300x294.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1572\/files\/2013\/06\/Landuse_society_model-1024x1004.png 1024w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1572\/files\/2013\/06\/Landuse_society_model.png 1061w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Below is an adapted model that I created which will focus on the cultural, social, and economic interactions as they relate to urban green space.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/files\/2013\/06\/weems_landuse_society_model.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-530 aligncenter\" alt=\"weems_landuse_society_model\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/geo599spatialstatistics\/files\/2013\/06\/weems_landuse_society_model-300x220.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1572\/files\/2013\/06\/weems_landuse_society_model-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1572\/files\/2013\/06\/weems_landuse_society_model-1024x752.png 1024w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1572\/files\/2013\/06\/weems_landuse_society_model.png 1355w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I want to detect spatial\u00a0 changes in social\/economic composition and environmental benefits of communities over time.
