{"id":939,"date":"2012-10-12T15:19:25","date_gmt":"2012-10-12T22:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/freechoicelab\/?p=939"},"modified":"2012-10-12T15:20:19","modified_gmt":"2012-10-12T22:20:19","slug":"becoming-a-better-environmental-educator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/freechoicelab\/2012\/10\/12\/becoming-a-better-environmental-educator\/","title":{"rendered":"Becoming a Better Environmental Educator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have spent 4\u00bd days listening and learning from other environmental educators.\u00a0 I am at the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) conference in Oakland, CA with two colleagues, Dan Calvert and Jen Wyld.\u00a0 We have definitely taken the \u201cdivide and conquer\u201d idea at this conference so we could experience and share as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>A few things from this week have really stood out.\u00a0 While there is not a large informal education presence, this conference has offered a lot of talks that I (and hopefully some of you) have an interest in and I think a lot of them apply to informal learning.<\/p>\n<p>During the Research Symposium, the presenters had us divide into groups and go out into an urban green space.\u00a0 They challenged us to answer questions that were originally posed by Aldo Leopold to his students: What is happening here?\u00a0 What has happened here? What should happen here?\u00a0 We used these questions to think about the more-than-human world.<\/p>\n<p>The actual conference opened Wednesday night with an amazing keynote by Annie Leonard, who talked about \u201cThe Story of Stuff\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.storyofstuff.org\/\">www.storyofstuff.org\/<\/a>).\u00a0 Annie was an enthusiastic presenter with so many zingers that I can\u2019t possibly type them all out here!<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday morning, Jen &amp; I (and about 40 other conference attendees) went on an urban hike with Oakland Native American youth.\u00a0 We learned about their program and the importance of outdoor experiences to their identity and sense of place.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 2px; font-size: 10px; color: #76838b;\" href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/freechoicelab\/\" target=\"_blank\">Free-Choice<\/a> on <a style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #76838b;\" href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\" target=\"_blank\">Pinterest<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hector (\u2026and if you are reading this Hector and I misspelled your name, leave a comment or email me for a correction!) was our guide and has been involved with the program for 8 years.\u00a0 He took us up to Inspiration Point in Joaquin Miller Park.\u00a0 We spent some time taking in the view of Oakland and then Hector shared that he comes up to this point when he feels stressed, even if it\u2019s at midnight.\u00a0 He also shared, so eloquently, that \u201cWe have to remind ourselves that we all started somewhere.\u00a0 We all came from the woods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday we heard about how environmental education can integrate equity, inclusion, and diversity.\u00a0 We also heard from three inspirational women about effective social media (maybe a discussion for another day).<\/p>\n<p>Today is my last day here.\u00a0 This morning I went to a panel about eating local food and partnering with farmers for education.\u00a0 This was nicely followed by a visit to the Oakland Farmer\u2019s Market!<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 2px;
