DJ Tequilamockingnerd
I became a cohost on Inspiration Dissemination (ID) in 2015 after being interviewed as a guest. At first, I wanted to be on ID because it seemed like a fun way to practice my own communication and hone my communication skills. Now, I see the role of Inspiration Dissemination as a resource for graduate students and the broad Oregon State and external community.
For graduate students, we provide an opportunity to communicate their research to a broad audience, avoiding jargon and capitalizing on applications of basic science. In addition, the interviews act as a audio CV because we delve into the journey of each guest to graduate school.
For the community, we provide a digestible version of research that is happening locally. At the end of each show, we ask the guest to provide advice: general life advice or advice to students considering graduate school. As an alumnus of an undergraduate only college, I would have found advice from graduate students useful when planning my graduate program because I was not able to interact with graduate students on a regular basis.
Through ID, I have come to appreciate the phenomenal community of graduate students that I am a part of. I have learned so much from my fellow students from non-plant organismal biology, computer science, engineering, forestry, and the humanities. Having interacted with this diverse group, I appreciate even more a diverse network of colleagues and the support they can offer. Being a host on ID has been a very positive experience and I intend to continue hosting until I complete my PhD.
